If there is something we are passionate about at the Alma Mater of Cauca, it is the promotion of practices and lifestyles that foster good health, both physical and emotional. This is an unmistakable hallmark of our University, an institution that cares about the well-being of its people. For this reason, the Physiotherapy Program led the commemoration of World Physical Activity Day with a major event held on April 23, 2025, at the Alfonso López neighborhood Sports Complex in the city of Popayán.
The initiative, carried out under the slogan “It’s Time to Move,” was organized jointly with the Alfonso López University Health Center, also part of this house of thought. Thanks to an excellent effort of coordination, it also included the participation of the Municipal Health Secretariat, Indeportes Cauca, the Purple Patrol of the National Police, and the Colombian Network for Physical Activity.
During the event, more than 300 people participated, among whom the 140 older adults who decided to get moving stood out in particular. Likewise, students in the sixth, seventh, and tenth semesters of the Physiotherapy Program played a leading role in planning and carrying out the activities. This work was integrated as part of the courses Exercise Prescription, Practice in Physical Activity and Sport, and the Elective in Advanced Sport Studies, strengthening their professional skills in real-world settings. It was truly wonderful to move from theory to practice in a real and challenging context!
Blood pressure monitoring, guided physical activity sessions, recreational spaces, and sports dance were just some of the diverse activities offered. The outcome could not have been more positive: the day concluded with the satisfaction of having created an extremely beneficial experience for the physical and emotional well-being of all participants. “There was always a warm and friendly atmosphere, fostering an intergenerational meeting, community integration, and active participation,” stated Jeffry Alexander Hoyos Quisoboni, professor of the Physiotherapy Program, who led the organization of the event.
“The positive impact we aim for with these kinds of spaces is to promote healthy habits and lifestyles as tools for well-being and the prevention of various diseases, and, of course, to also contribute to the creation of new community gatherings and the continuation of strategies that seek to make physical activity a central role in the health of older adults and the university community,” concluded Professor Jeffry Hoyos, with the satisfaction of having contributed to this beautiful work.
Without a doubt, the University of Cauca celebrates and deeply values initiatives like this, which not only bring to life the fourth pillar of the Institutional Development Plan, “For a University of Excellence and Solidarity”, aimed at fostering culture and well-being as drivers of development, but also strengthen ties with the local territory. Actions such as these reaffirm the Unicauca commitment to its surroundings, especially with the Alfonso López neighborhood and its community, to whom the University seeks to bring joy, health, and hope through collaborative and supportive work.
