At a crucial moment for our democracy, the University of Cauca joins the reflection on the importance of a responsible and peaceful electoral process, recognizing the initiative “Colombia Dresses in Electoral Peace,” a national campaign promoted by the Office of the Inspector General of the Nation, together with the National Civil Registry Office, the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, and organizations from the productive sector and civil society. This strategy seeks to strengthen transparency and guarantee that the popular will is expressed without coercion, and it is from this perspective that our commitment is focused on strengthening our democracy.

As an institution that is #HeritageOfAll, we firmly believe in the transformative power of education to strengthen our democratic fabric. In this context, the strategy “Colombia Dresses in Electoral Peace,” promoted by the Office of the Inspector General of the Nation, together with the National Civil Registry Office, the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, and other public-private entities that have joined the initiative, seeks to promote a strong civic pedagogy aimed at preventing irregularities, strengthening transparency, and guaranteeing that the popular will is expressed without coercion, avoiding the polarization that has negative impacts on the electoral environment. In the Colombian capital, on February 26, this process was launched under the leadership of the Inspector General of the Nation, Gregorio Eljach Pacheco, making a broad call for many institutions at the national and regional levels to take an active part in replicating it in multiple settings.

For this reason, from this house of studies that is approaching its bicentennial, we join this campaign through a clear and forceful message: the defense of every citizen’s right to choose freely must never be put at risk! As a public university, we reaffirm our commitment to the education of critical, ethical, and responsible professionals, capable of understanding the importance of exercising the right to vote as a legitimate tool for nation-building.

We firmly believe that democracy is strengthened when elections are free, transparent, secure, and when their results are respected as the authentic expression of the majority’s will.

We invite our university community, students, professors, administrative staff, and graduates, to actively participate in democratic processes, remembering that respecting the opinions of those who think differently is also a way of building peace.

The defense of the electoral process is, in essence, the defense of our rights, our decisions, and the possibility of continuing to build a more just and inclusive society. From academia, we contribute knowledge, reflection, and awareness so that every citizen exercises the right to vote with responsibility and conviction.

Because we trust in the transformative power of education and in the value of dialogue as the path to resolve our differences, today and always we reaffirm that we are, above all, a university for peace, and for that reason, our University also dresses in #PazElectoral.
