Protection of the fauna and flora on our campuses: this is how we advance in environmental management processes at Unicauca!

Between May 30 and June 28 of this year, a series of interventions are underway in the tree system of our Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Natural, Exact, and Educational Sciences, aimed at restoring and conserving the university ecosystem. So, take note: we recommend paying attention to the signage when walking around our campuses.

The trees planted across the University of Cauca’s alma mater campus form a wonderful ecosystem that coexists with every member of our university community, providing multiple benefits such as clean air, shade, beautiful flowers, and the occasional delicious fruit. Without a doubt, their presence not only makes the university look beautiful and lush, but also contributes to a healthy environment. And, of course, we cannot forget that they are also home to animals and insects that are essential to ecological balance, such as birds, bees, squirrels, and opossums, which are a fundamental part of our local environment.

In this context, last Friday, May 30, a socialization session was held at the Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences and Education, led by Topoforestal (a company founded by University of Cauca alumni) and the Center for Quality Management and Institutional Accreditation, with the support of a group of professors who are experts in the field. During the meeting, attendees were informed that between May 30 and June 28, 2025, interventions will be carried out on a group of approximately 23 trees located at the Faculties of Civil Engineering and Natural and Exact Sciences and Education, both part of the Tulcán campus in the city of Popayán.

These actions, authorized by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cauca (CRC), the regulatory authority for this type of process, mainly include maintenance pruning aimed at preserving and protecting the intervened trees. However, some specimens will need to be completely removed due to the high risk of uprooting or falling branches, an imminent hazard given the recent rainfall.

Although we understand that this is a sensitive issue that may cause sadness, it is important for us, as members of the University of Cauca community, to be aware that these decisions are made with the well-being of the trees in mind, as well as the safety of our university community and the protection of the wildlife that inhabits the campus. And there is good news: during these workdays, the planting of native species is also planned, as part of the institution’s commitment to conserving its green spaces. In addition, diagnostic assessments will be conducted to detect the presence of wildlife in the trees, and if any is found, Topoforestal will be responsible for its controlled relocation, following all necessary protocols to prevent harm and minimize the impact on the dynamics of their habitat.

It is essential not to overlook the recommendations provided by engineer Jennifer Palechor, a representative of Topoforestal: “While Topoforestal will try to carry out these interventions during periods when students, faculty, and administrative staff are not on campus, there will be times when the community will see us operating. In such cases, the areas will be properly signposted. As a general recommendation, we remind you that these are high-risk operations, and you should not stop in unsafe areas to observe without taking the appropriate precautions. Our team will be fully focused on the task, but it is important for you to be aware of the existing risks and, therefore, to respect the areas that will be marked off.”

Therefore, if over the coming days you see warning signs or personnel working near the trees on campus, we encourage you to proceed with caution and remain attentive. Please do not cross the safety tape used to restrict access to certain areas, yes, we have seen on previous occasions that some people ignore this type of signage. Let us all take care of our safety. These actions are also intended to protect you and everyone who shares this space, as we remain committed to safeguarding the nature that surrounds us.
