The University of Cauca is approaching its bicentennial and is celebrating its 197th anniversary in a big way!

Every November 11, the Unicauca community and citizens who feel this Alma Mater as their own celebrate the anniversary of this institution, which is #HeritageForAll. And it is no wonder, as for 197 years, the University of Cauca has been transforming lives and making the dreams of students, professors, and staff come true. To enthusiastically celebrate this important date, a distinguished program of activities has been organized, activities we hope everyone can enjoy together with family and friends, because everything has been prepared for you!

“Today, our responsibility and our task is to continue resisting, through rigorous thought, the irrationality of violence and war; to keep building, with hope, formative alternatives that allow us to transform lives; and to keep generating opportunities for a country and a region that call for the sensitivity and intelligence of this institution that belongs to them,” were the words chosen by the Rector of the University of Cauca, Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, to begin the commemoration of the 197th anniversary of the Alma Mater of Cauca. Indeed, among its many roles, this higher education institution is committed to mitigating the violence experienced in our department and, as a representation of that commitment, an agenda has been organized focused on commemorating, building, and strengthening a legacy, one that is approaching its bicentennial, centered on what is truly important.

“Our greatest offering is to call upon the most lucid among us, the most tolerant, the most hopeful, the most resilient and persevering, the most supportive, the most sensitive and committed, to remain steadfast in our university endeavor to honor its name and perpetuate its legacy, with the conviction that we have and inhabit a great institution that obliges us, through thought and heart, to redeem human suffering. With the certainty that we transform lives and realities, and with the pride of being Unicaucano, all that remains for me to say is: happy 197th birthday, my beloved University of Cauca,” continued the emotional message from our Rector, before extending an invitation to participate in each of the activities and events that have been lovingly prepared.

Thus, this week will begin with a gift received by the University of Cauca as part of its 197th anniversary; a gift that is the result of the work of the José María Arboleda Llorente Center for Historical Research, as the Colonial section of the Old Collection of the Central Archive of Cauca, safeguarded by our institution, receives its official registration in the Memory of the World Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (MoWLAC). To commemorate this achievement, the “First José María Arboleda Llorente Colloquium: Regional Archives and History Laboratories” has been organized. The event will begin with the official delivery of the registration on Tuesday, November 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the Paraninfo Francisco José de Caldas and will continue on Wednesday, November 13 at the new campus of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences. “Today is a day of celebration! We are proud to announce that we have entered the Memory of Latin America and the Caribbean list, and for this reason we would like to invite you to reflect together on the richness and value of our documentary heritage,” stated Beatriz Quintero, director of the Historical Archive of the University of Cauca.

And since this year we have decided that the celebration will revolve around music, for a reason that fills us with excitement but that we will announce in the coming days, the festivities continue with a truly magical concert, an unprecedented performance! On Wednesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m., we look forward to seeing you at the Guillermo Valencia Municipal Theater for an unforgettable evening with Litoral Sinfónico. In this way, the University of Cauca continues the celebration of its 197 years of history with a masterful fusion between our Symphony Orchestra, regional musicians, and artists from the Presidential Program Sounds for Peacebuilding, who, to the vibrant rhythms of the Pacific, will sing to this institution that stands as a symbol of identity for Cauca and the Southwest. Just as each one of us is part of the symphony that gives life to Unicauca, together we are the harmony that has made possible this legacy of nearly two centuries. “It will be a celebration full of color, music, vitality, and an abundance of rhythm, through which we aim to convey unity — the very unity that will allow us to move forward as a region and as a country. Because by joining efforts, our impacts, even from the smallest yet most meaningful tasks, become the most powerful in our territory,” highlighted Diego Hernández, principal conductor of the University of Cauca Symphony Orchestra and, together with Salomé Gómez, director of the concert.

For Friday, November 15, we are indeed called to build collectively. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Paraninfo Francisco José de Caldas, we will hold the Encuentro: We Are All Unicauca, a space for reflecting on the financial challenges faced by public universities. “We invite the entire department of Cauca, departmental leaders, government authorities, mayors, the governor, council members, deputies, professors, students, workers, the general community, business associations, labor unions, and social organizations, to join together in the search for solutions to the university’s financial crisis, which must, of course, involve a change in the educational policy established by Law 30 of 1992,” stated Emanuel Espinel, student representative to the Academic Council of the Alma Mater. It is important to mention that this space is promoted by the Office of the Rector of this house of thought, together with its Peace Commission, the Association of University Professors (ASPU), the Union of Workers and Employees of Colombian Universities (SINTRAUNICOL), the student movement Unicauca Unida, El Palenque Universitario, and the Colombian Student Organization (OCE). For this reason, everyone is warmly invited to participate.

That same day, at 3:00 p.m. in the Salón Fundadores of the Santo Domingo Cloister, the installation ceremony of the oil portraits of former rectors Harold Muñoz Muñoz and Danilo Reinaldo Vivas Ramos will take place. It will be a distinguished event through which we express our gratitude to these individuals who have played an important role in the recent history of the University of Cauca.

As you can see, with this special agenda we once again invite you to come together to joyfully celebrate the legacy of this house of thought , a symbol of our region, which strives every day to provide opportunities not only to the nation’s youth, but to all Colombians who take part in its activities, research, and projects. Let us say in unison: Happy birthday, Unicauca! and enjoy this meaningful date through the activities that have been organized.

Additionally, we conclude by announcing that we are preparing a year-end gala event, through which we hope to honor our most valuable heritage, our people, and about which we will soon share more details.
