UNICAUCA, our collective heritage!

There are spaces that are not only inhabited: they are felt, lived, and defended with the heart and a genuine, loving commitment. The University of Cauca is not simply a set of buildings, classrooms, and hallways; it is living memory, shared history, and the collective project of thousands of young people, professors, administrative staff, and their families, who have found here the possibility to transform their lives and make their dreams come true. By affirming that UNICAUCA is our collective heritage, we recognize that it belongs to all of us, and that, at the same time, we also belong to it.

For nearly 200 years, this living and ever-evolving house has been a space where knowledge becomes a tool for freedom. Within its classrooms, professionals, social leaders, researchers, artists, and citizens committed to their region and to the country have been educated. But beyond degrees and academic achievements, what truly distinguishes the Alma Mater from Cauca is its ability to sow hope. Each member of the University of Cauca community undoubtedly brings with them a story, a dream, a goal that impacts entire territories and communities.

To assume it as collective heritage implies understanding a shared responsibility. Recognizing that what is public belongs to everyone does not mean appropriation, but commitment: a sense of belonging that protects, values, and strengthens. That is what the University represents: a space for critical thinking, ongoing dialogue, and diversity, where the aim is to bring ideas together and find ways to connect with one another. It is natural that within a broad community there are differences in opinions, knowledge, practices, and sensitivities. At times, these differences generate uncertainty. However, it is precisely in those moments that we must remember who we are and what our mission is.

The reflection is clear: in the face of any adversity, violence will never be the path nor the answer. Confrontation divides, fragments, and leaves deep and painful marks on the heart. Instead, we are called to strengthen the University as a setting where words and respectful dialogue form the basis of consensus. Thus, engaging in dialogue is not an act of weakness, but of courage. It requires listening even in disagreement, recognizing the other as a legitimate interlocutor, and seeking points of connection amid difference. This is what it means to be consistent with our educational mission. How can we speak of social transformation if we do not practice peace within our own environment?

Peace is built every day, in everyday gestures, in the way we approach and resolve conflicts, in how we address others, and in the willingness to understand before judging. Students, professors, and administrative staff play a fundamental role in this task. It is not the responsibility of a few; it is a collective commitment.

I would like to take a moment to thank all those who resisted, expressed their indignation, and stood by the University when the regrettable and disconcerting acts of violence occurred at the Rector’s Office facilities this week that is now coming to an end. That courageous presence and stance, in the midst of such a painful situation, deeply moved us. It was a clear demonstration of how much we care about this house that we feel as OURS. The unity and commitment of the University of Cauca community, as well as the messages of solidarity we received not only from the University sectors but also from the broader public, fill us with hope and make us feel that we are on the right path. These gestures are a powerful reminder that love and respect for our institution are stronger than any adversity. In those difficult moments, the community stands as a stronghold of defense and support, reaffirming that together we are capable of facing any challenge.

In connection with the above, the invitation is that today, more than ever, we embrace our house. Here, meaningful friendships are born and great life projects are forged. It is the setting for long days of study and work, for deep conversations in the hallways, and for celebrations of achieved goals. All of this forms an invisible fabric that unites us.

This is the moment to reaffirm our identity and our principles. Let differences become opportunities for learning; let difficulties make us stronger; let love for our institution stand above any conflict. The greatness of the University of Cauca is not measured solely by its academic prestige, but by the human quality of those who are part of it and those who have built its nearly bicentennial history.

Every action counts, from caring for physical spaces to maintaining respectful relationships among classmates, colleagues, professors, and administrative staff. Let dialogue prevail, let words carry more strength than confrontation, and let empathy overcome any form of violence. Let us remember that the University of Cauca is, above all, a University for peace.
