Unicaucanos researchers present their proposals during the Latin American Hydraulics Congress.​

Professors and students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at our Alma Mater participated with two papers and a poster during the 31st Latin American Congress of Hydraulics, held from October 1 to 4 at the University of Medellín.

Representing the Research Group in Hydraulics and Hydrology and the HydroInnovación Research Training Group, attached to the Department of Hydraulics of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Cauca, professors Felipe Agredo, Andrea Bolaños, and María Jimena Paredes, together with students Dayanna Jiménez, Mildred Pantoja, Daniela Ortiz, and Kevin Rengifo, participated in the XXXI Latin American Congress of Hydraulics of the IAHR (International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research) and IAHR Iberoamérica.

During the event, which took place from October 1 to 4 at the University of Medellín, the group presented two oral talks and one poster, all of which received excellent feedback from experts in hydraulics and hydrology from across Latin America. Their contributions sparked valuable discussions regarding future research and potential collaborations. Particularly noteworthy was their work benefiting the department of Cauca, including the development of regional models for estimating maximum flows, methodologies for reconstructing flow data, and the implementation of a user-friendly, publicly accessible website providing processed rainfall information; an essential tool for both consulting and research.

Likewise, the Unicaucano delegation received support from professor María Jimena Paredes, who accompanied and guided the presenters and students throughout the event, contributing significantly to the group’s successful participation. In addition to their presentations, the University of Cauca delegation attended keynote lectures and talks by international experts, allowing them to learn first-hand about the latest advancements and global trends in hydraulics.

“By sharing space with great masters and PhD experts from the water sector, one becomes aware that the more you learn, the more you realize how much there is still left to explore. This experience motivates us to continue working and building science from our beloved department of Cauca and from the University of Cauca,” stated Professor Felipe Agredo.

Given the excellent outcomes, the Hydraulics and Hydrology Research Group is already preparing new studies and research projects with the goal of applying to the 41st IAHR World Congress on Hydraulics, which will take place next year in Singapore.

Within the framework of events like this, the importance of continuing to strengthen research and collaboration among universities and experts from the region and the world becomes evident. The reflections that took place during this congress not only enrich knowledge but also highlight our Alma Mater’s commitment to developing innovative solutions that have a positive impact not only on Cauca, but also beyond local and regional borders.

These types of spaces not only celebrate knowledge but also remind us of the constant need to learn, improve, and share what we know in order to confront the challenges of the present and the future—something that, without a doubt, is a fundamental part of the Unicaucano DNA.
