With a project focused on the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques to the monitoring of satellite systems, students from the University of Cauca represented the institution during EMAVI University Week 2025, an academic event that brought together young people from different regions of the country to share experiences in aerospace innovation and development.

Within the framework of (World Space Week), the Military Aviation School “Marco Fidel Suárez” (EMAVI) held EMAVI University Week 2025 under the theme “Exploration with purpose: the challenge of space,” an academic event that reaffirmed the national commitment to innovation, scientific training, and the strengthening of the country’s space capabilities. Over four days, EMAVI brought together more than 700 young members of the academic community from Valle del Cauca, along with representatives from the Colombian Navy, the National Police, the Non-Commissioned Officers School of the Colombian Aerospace Force, and various universities in the region. This space promoted the exchange of knowledge and the presentation of high-impact projects in aerospace engineering, artificial intelligence, and national defense.

In this context, Víctor Manuel Macías Martínez, a final-semester student in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Cauca, who is currently completing his professional internship at the Research and Development Center for Aerospace Technologies (CITAE) of the Colombian Aerospace Force, presented his work entitled “Data Mining for Early Detection of Failures in the GPS of the FACSAT-II Satellite” at the event’s Poster Gallery. In this regard, it is important to note that the FACSAT-II Satellite, currently in orbit, is a 3U Earth observation CubeSat launched in 2023. This satellite represents Colombia’s third satellite and the second under the name of the Colombian Aerospace Force, consolidating the country’s progress in the development and operation of its own space missions focused on Earth observation and environmental management.

The research presented by the University of Cauca student is supervised by Professor Ph.D. César Alberto Collazos Ordóñez, affiliated with the Department of Systems, and co-supervised by Professor M. Sc. Mario Andrés Córdoba González, from the Department of Physics, who guide the methodological, experimental, and scientific development of the project. This work seeks to strengthen the space capabilities of the Colombian Aerospace Force through the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining techniques applied to the monitoring, diagnosis, and early detection of anomalies in the country’s satellite systems. Given that satellites operate in remote and extreme conditions, exposed to radiation, thermal fluctuations, and events from the space environment, the development of intelligent monitoring mechanisms is essential to ensure reliable performance and extend their operational life in orbit.

In this way, the participation of the University of Cauca in EMAVI University Week 2025 reaffirms the institutional commitment to applied research, interinstitutional cooperation, and the education of highly qualified engineers capable of providing innovative solutions to advance science and space technology in Colombia. The institution feels deeply proud of its students, whose talent and dedication demonstrate that at the University of Cauca we transform lives and make dreams come true through knowledge.
