In the current Institutional Development Plan, titled “For a University of Excellence and Solidarity,” the third strategic axis establishes the goal of being a supportive university committed to its surroundings, a commitment that includes guaranteeing the right to life, peace, reconciliation, and the inclusion of diversity. In this sense, when reflecting on our environment, peace, reconciliation, and differences, we must consider not only human interactions but also our relationship with the context we inhabit and the biodiversity that surrounds us. Within this panorama, one aspect stands out as a unique advantage that makes us a natural powerhouse: Colombia, as one of the world’s megadiverse countries, possesses an extraordinary variety of life that nurtures and enriches us, and that today, more than ever, we are called to protect.

At the University of Cauca, professors, students, administrative staff, alumni, and leadership, many of them deeply connected to their roots, love for their land, and academic passions, are carrying out various initiatives to promote environmental awareness. Many members of the Unicaucano community come from megadiverse territories such as the heart of the Colombian Massif, a vital space for the country. And because so many initiatives are being undertaken across such diverse fields, it is difficult to list them all. However, what excites us deeply is the recognition that they share a common goal: promoting a harmonious relationship between human beings and their environment! Among these efforts, we highlight the notable work of the Museum of Natural History as a key research center in generating knowledge about biodiversity. “For us, it is essential to stay informed about the agreements adopted at COP16, as this will allow us to update our strategies and take part in global solutions, which in turn will strengthen the Museum’s projection both nationally and internationally,” stated Professor Jimmy Guerrero, director of this Museum that stands as a national heritage site with the Unicauca seal.
