With the development of IEEE COLCOM 2025, Unicauca hosted an international conversation on telecommunications and computing

The University of Cauca positioned itself as a hub of global knowledge by hosting the IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM 2025), the country’s premier event in telecommunications and computing. From August 13 to 15, our institution welcomed experts from Brazil, Canada, Germany, and Colombia, consolidating its leading role at the technological forefront.

This event became a reality thanks to teamwork! It received crucial support from members of the ComSoCauca research seedbed, including Luisa Alegría, Laura Mosquera, Camilo Llantén, and Kevin Bermúdez. Professors and colleagues from the Telematics Engineering Group; Johanna Hurtado, Edwin Castillo, Gustavo Ramírez, and Diego López, also played a decisive role, along with the IEEE Colombia Section and its national chapters of the IEEE Communications Society, IEEE Computer Society, and IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS). Representatives from institutions such as the University of Antioquia (Sergio Gutiérrez), Santo Tomás University (Diana Briceño), ICESI University (Andrés Navarro), and the Francisco José de Caldas District University (Fabián Martínez) contributed their valuable expertise.

IEEE COLCOM 2025 shone with the participation of world-class keynote speakers, including Raouf Boutaba (Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada), Lisandro Granville (General Director of Brazil’s National Research Network), Luiz Bittencourt (Research Director at the Institute of Computing of the State University of Campinas, Brazil), Sandra Julieta Rueda (Director of the Master’s Program in Information Security at the University of the Andes), Bernd Blobel (University of Regensburg, Germany), and Carlos Astudillo (graduate of the University of Cauca and professor at the State University of Campinas, Brazil).

Over three intense days, 11 technical sessions were held with researchers from Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Spain, and Colombia. “Papers and posters were presented in areas such as networking, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and distributed systems, with representation from national institutions including the University of Antioquia, EAFIT, ICESI University, the Technical University of the North, the University of La Sabana, the University of Cauca, the Francisco de Paula Santander University, the University of the Andes, the University of Sinú, Unicomfacauca, and the University of Rosario,” added Professor Caicedo Rendón.

A particularly significant moment was the panel “The Role of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Colombian ICT Industry,” featuring César Fletcher (Ayté and Sabio Cx), Alberto Gonzáles (GrowData), Luis Rojas (The Bit Bang Company), Jonathan Achinte (Password), and Jair Gómez (GrandTek), as well as Nexura. The panelists agreed that “The impact of generative AI on the Colombian ICT industry is imminent, and events such as COLCOM provide an opportunity to discuss how to enhance its responsible and strategic use.” The gala dinner brought the event to a close with the presentation of the conference’s Best Paper Award to Professor Pablo Bertrand of the University of the Republic (Uruguay).

The University of Cauca, with its nearly bicentennial legacy, celebrates these achievements that consolidate its leadership in ICT and the international projection of its graduates and students. Events such as the IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM 2025) and Colombia 4.0 not only generate satisfaction, but also propel the institution toward new levels of excellence and continued leadership in technological development. Without a doubt, these accomplishments inspire us to project ourselves with greater strength and to work every day to further position the hallmark of the University of Cauca in diverse settings.
