Unicaucano Professor, featured in an anthological book of Latin American short stories

The Mexican publisher Letraria, in its anthological book of cosmic horror stories, highlights the work and the writer Jorge Alberto López for his ability to craft an eloquent story that captivates readers.

Professor Jorge Alberto López Guzmán, affiliated with the Department of Geography at the University of Cauca, received recognition from the Mexican publishing house Letraria for his outstanding contribution to the cosmic horror short story anthology, with his story “The Gene of Discord,” in which he demonstrates his ability to craft an eloquent narrative that captivates readers.

The publishing house highlights his participation in the cosmic horror anthology, which sought to recreate works of terror or cosmic horror that reclaim the narratives of Howard Phillips Lovecraft from the perspective of Latin American writers. The anthology will be published digitally and in print between the months of November and December of this year.

The short story written by the professor, “The Gene of Discord,” is a narrative that challenges the boundary between science and ethics, presenting a forceful critique of animal experimentation and genetic manipulation.

Through the voice of Físter, a genetically modified laboratory mouse, López Guzmán explores themes such as identity, justice, and power, questioning the established hierarchy between humans and animals. The narrative, which moves between introspection and action, creates a tension that reflects Físter’s internal struggle between his condition as a lab animal and his desire for freedom and revenge.

Additionally, the story highlights the paradox of science that seeks to cure human diseases at the expense of animal suffering, prompting reflection on human responsibility toward living beings and the environment.

The narrative structure, which combines elements of science fiction and realism, creates an atmosphere of tension and suspense that mirrors the internal conflict of Físter and of society as a whole.

Ultimately, “The Gene of Discord” is a call for awareness and reflection on the ethical limits of science and technology.
