In Cauca, a territory historically affected by multiple conflicts, the commitment to eliminating violence in all its forms truly takes on a profound meaning, especially when we are part of a public institution of higher education that, for 197 years, has been dedicated to training professionals committed to contributing to the construction of both the region and the nation.
For this reason, as an institution we acknowledge that, although we are not currently a 100% safe place for all women, men, and non-binary individuals, it is important to share that we are working to strengthen our mechanisms in a more decisive way, with the goal of becoming a fully safe space. In this regard, within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we invite you, as members of the Unicauca community, to become active agents of change, starting by questioning our daily words, gestures, and actions, since the path toward a violence-free society requires not only major structural transformations but also small everyday actions that, when combined, generate a significant positive impact.
We are aware that there is still a long road ahead; however, it is important to highlight the efforts made by students, professors, administrative staff, alumni, research groups, collectives, and other members of our community who are working toward the eradication of violence in our society, striving to raise awareness and foster sensitivity around this issue that concerns all of us. In this sense, every word matters, and every silence in the face of injustice contributes to perpetuating the problem. Therefore, it is essential to promote respectful dialogue, reject violent attitudes, and assume an active role in building a change that is, without a doubt, both urgent and necessary!
From this house of thought and reflection, we offer our apologies to those who have been victims of Gender-Based Violence within our Alma Mater, for as an institution committed to peacebuilding, we recognize our responsibility to promote truth, justice, and reparation. For this reason, we reiterate our commitment to strengthening mechanisms for prevention, care, and support, ensuring that any person who has been a victim of violence, or who is aware of related cases, can file a formal report with the confidence of receiving support and an effective response. And although it is a challenge, filing a report is a fundamental step to activating the necessary institutional pathways and providing comprehensive assistance. Thus, today our call and deep reflection is that the eradication of violence must not be limited to occasional commemorations, but instead requires a constant commitment that challenges us both as individuals and as a community.
Finally, we invite every member of our Unicauca community to reflect on their role in the transformation toward a society free of violence, as building a better Cauca requires collective and ongoing effort. For this reason, we reaffirm our university’s commitment to being an active part in the eradication of all forms of violence, assuming the mission of moving toward a University that not only trains professionals who transform lives and make dreams come true, but also forms agents of change committed to peace. Let us work together so that this University, which is #HeritageForAll, may also be safe for all.
So, in conclusion, at Unicauca we recognize ourselves in order to transform ourselves! We will continue doing everything necessary to lay the foundations and strengthen a University in which we collectively build a coexistence free of violence.
