The members of the Research Group on Natural Hazards, Risk, and Territory, attached to the Civil Engineering program at the Santander de Quilichao campus, shared the results of their research initiatives.

The University of Cauca, through students, graduates, and faculty members from the Research Seedbed in Natural Hazards, Risk, and Territory of the Civil Engineering program at the Santander de Quilichao campus, participated in the 20th Colombian Geological Congress (CCG2025), organized by the Colombian Geological Society in Cali from August 13 to 15, an academic and scientific event of great national relevance.

Attendance at this event provided the opportunity to share the results of their research projects carried out within the framework of the Seedbed’s initiatives and to reaffirm the commitment of the Santander de Quilichao campus to contributing to the territory from academia. This participation promotes the presence of students in nationally recognized settings, strengthening their professional, technical, and human development. The research seedbed is part of the Research Group in Science and Engineering in Environmental Systems (GCISA-TSEJK), affiliated with the Faculty of Civil Engineering.

The research projects presented at the event were as follows:

  • “Risk Analysis of Flash Floods in Rural Aqueducts: A Case Study in the Rioblanco Indigenous Settlement, Sotará – Cauca.” Presented by alumna Mariana Ulchur Ruiz and Professor Enif Medina Bello.
  • “Characterization of Mass Movements and Erosive Processes in the Quilichao River Micro-Watershed, Santander de Quilichao – Cauca.” Presented by alumni Julián Hernández Guachavez and Valentina Bocanegra Pajoy, together with Professor Edgar A. Rodríguez Castiblanco.
  • “Preliminary Geomechanical Zoning of the Urban Center of Santander de Quilichao, Cauca.” Presented by students Marlen Martínez Cundar and Neider Pillimue Corpus, along with Professor Edgar A. Rodríguez.

The congress brought together professionals, researchers, and experts from different regions of the country, enabling a valuable academic and scientific exchange.

For the students and recent graduates, the experience was highly enriching: they were able to present their work, interact with peers from other universities and institutions, and broaden their perspective on the challenges facing civil engineering.
