Beyond the Basic Sciences! Honoring a Professor Who Challenges Limits, at Unicauca We Celebrate Physicist Engineer Day; a Field in Which We Are Pioneers

Every March 26, we celebrate the Day of the Physics Engineer, a date to recognize the impact of this discipline on the scientific and technological development of the world we live in. On this occasion, we highlight the career of Professor Lina Marcela Jaller, affiliated with the Department of Physics at the U, and explore the history of our Physics Engineering program.

Created under Superior Agreement No. 024 of June 20, 1995, the Unicauca Physics Engineering program has indeed been a pioneer in Colombia in training highly skilled professionals capable of applying knowledge of physics, mathematics, and technology to solve real-world problems. Its academic excellence was reaffirmed with the renewal of its Qualified Registry, a certification issued by the Ministry of National Education through Resolution 6518 on August 9, 2011.

In this regard, it is important not to lose sight of the fact that, within Colombian territory, the University of Cauca was the first to offer this training, becoming a benchmark for other institutions such as the National University, the Technological University of Pereira, and EAFIT University in Medellín. That is why, within the framework of the celebration of Physics Engineer Day, we have the perfect excuse to highlight the career of Professor Lina Marcela Jaller, a #ProudlyUnicauca Physics Engineer and holder of a Master’s in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the University of Barcelona. Lina, a teacher by nature, has been shaping future Physics Engineers since 2024, and she recalls her beginnings with excitement: “My interest in Physics Engineering started when I was in school, as I have always enjoyed understanding physical phenomena. But beyond the Basic Sciences, I was intrigued by seeing Physics Engineering in social action, when science, context, and real-world challenges come together to find ways to make life easier.”

In addition to her passion for Physics Engineering, the professor balances her daily life by practicing athletics, a sport that some time ago led her to win a silver medal in the open category of the 5K race at the National University Games for ASCUN Staff. “For me, athletics is a lifestyle. My passion began by watching others practice it, and from the very first day I had the opportunity to try it, I fell in love with it. From that moment until now, I have tried to practice it in the best way possible,” said this talented Unicauca graduate, emphasizing the love and dedication she has developed for this discipline.

Now, Professor Lina Marcela took this opportunity to share a very moving message with her students: “My Physics Engineering students are the reason for my being or the purpose for which I have been at the University. Of course, all the research work is one of my pillars, but without them, many things we do as professors would make no sense. In the classrooms, I always try to emphasize that passion for the things we do is the most important. They have recognized Physics Engineering as a profession that combines Basic Sciences with technological processes, where we can develop tools that can make life more manageable. From that perspective, I always stress to them that the most important thing is to do what challenges them.”

Thus, and very much in line with Professor Lina Marcela’s wise words, the University of Cauca celebrates the work of all physics engineers, especially those who have passed through the classrooms of this house of thought, whose commitment and knowledge continue to transform lives and make dreams come true. Their work, often silent, is fundamental for the advancement of science and technology, and on the occasion of their day, we recognize their passion for discovering, innovating, and contributing to the progress of humanity, while reminding them how essential it is to balance research with physical activity, a mix that can provide the well-being needed to continue innovating and contributing to society.

Congratulations, physics engineers! Thank you for your contribution to the world and for pushing the boundaries.
