In this house of thought, where we transform lives and make dreams come true, from the very moment the current administration set itself in motion, we charted a roadmap entitled “For an Excellent and Supportive University”; which, in its second strategic axis, proposes to consolidate ourselves as an institution in which education generates opportunities and potentialities. Today, as we draw closer to the closing of this great journey, we begin to see the fruits of the hard work carried out as a team, and with deep pride we wish to share them through #EnClaveBicentenario, a series of contents created so that, within the framework of our first two centuries of history, we may bring to the forefront the achievements built as a result of the commitment of each and every one of the people who feel the University of Cauca as #HeritageOfAll.
In coherence with this vision, from the beginning of the current rectoral period, the one entrusted with delivering the bicentennial University, and under the leadership of the Academic Vice-Rector, Dr. Aída Patricia González Nieva, the Alma Mater of Cauca has promoted strategic actions to strengthen the performance of our students in the State Examination of Higher Education Quality – Saber Pro. But let us begin at the beginning: although we have surely heard much about this topic, do we know what it is? It is a standardized evaluation instrument for the external measurement of the quality of higher education. How does it work? It assesses the competencies of students who are close to completing the different professional university programs, becoming almost a thermometer of the education received and the development of the competencies of those who are about to receive their academic degrees.
With this clear panorama, let us return to the details of the way in which we have supported that commitment to the high quality of the education we offer from this region of the national territory, positioning ourselves as one of the best institutions. Among the actions promoted are workshops focused on strengthening critical reading and quantitative reasoning offered by the Permanence and Graduation Program – PermaneSer; the incorporation of Saber Pro-type questions in various courses as a training tool; incentives such as a 5% discount on graduation fees for those who achieve a high level of performance; the agreement with the National Open and Distance University (UNAD) for access to virtual preparation modules; and the coordinated work with each faculty to raise awareness about the importance of taking this examination with excellence. All of this has made it possible that, by 2024, the University of Cauca has reached a global score of 162, compared to the national average of 146.
“In general terms, in our average there is a consistent performance above the national average, both in global scores and in generic competencies, and a lower standard deviation in most of the modules indicates greater homogeneity in the results at the level of our students’ competencies,” stated Dr. Aída Patricia González Nieva, Academic Vice-Rector, in accordance with the analysis carried out based on the report of the Colombian Institute for the Evaluation of Education (ICFES).
Another key factor in the improvement of the results has been compliance with the academic calendar since 2022, avoiding interruptions and ensuring that students take the examination under the best conditions. Thanks to this, this house of thought has not only maintained its academic pace, but has also ensured that its students demonstrate competencies above the national average in all the areas evaluated, evidencing the commitment of the university community to quality and excellence.
Thus, looking toward the future, the University of Cauca projects to reinforce the actions that have yielded results and to identify the academic programs where it is necessary to strengthen specific competencies. Likewise, it seeks to encourage among students an awareness of the importance of taking these examinations, which not only offer individual benefits, but also have an impact on the accreditation processes of programs and of the institution as a whole.
With these achievements, we reaffirm that academic quality is the heart of our management and the compass that guides each of our actions, for they are the result of constant work, of the commitment of our university community, and of the conviction that education transforms lives. This joint effort leaves as its legacy a stronger, more competitive, and nationally recognized University of Cauca, one that prepares to celebrate its Bicentennial with pride, honoring its history, strengthening its roots, and projecting itself with excellence toward a future that will continue to open opportunities for new generations.
