As part of the closing of the rotation “Physiotherapy and Work in the Formal Productive Sector,” fifth-semester students from the Physiotherapy program at the University of Cauca carried out a meaningful intervention at the company Metrex S.A., located in the city of Popayán. This activity was conducted under the guidance of Professor Tatiana González Rojas and within the framework of the pedagogical strategy “Back School,” whose objective is to promote spinal care in workplace environments.
The session was designed and implemented by the students as part of their training practice, in coordination with the company’s Occupational Health and Safety area. “The central focus of the activity was musculoskeletal health education, aimed especially at production line operators, who daily face biomechanical risks derived from repetitive movements, prolonged postures, and load handling,” stated Professor Tatiana González Rojas.
In this way, with the teacher’s ongoing guidance and support, the students structured a comprehensive intervention using various pedagogical resources. Among them, anatomical models of the spine stood out, facilitating a visual and didactic explanation of its structure, function, and vulnerability in the face of the demands of physical work. In addition, the students presented educational videos of their own authorship, which addressed key topics such as postural hygiene, identification of risk factors, active breaks, and ergonomic recommendations adapted to the productive environment.
“One of the most valued components of the session was the implementation of a routine of physical exercises focused on strengthening the core musculature, that is, the group of muscles that provide support and stability to the spine. These practical sessions were guided by the students, who instructed the workers on the correct execution of each exercise and its usefulness in preventing occupational injuries,” the professor added.
The session concluded with a relaxation space in which conscious breathing techniques and guided meditations were used. This component sought not only to reduce the muscular tension accumulated during the workday, but also to promote emotional well-being, fostering a comprehensive view of health in the workplace environment.
This formative experience, which combines elements of intervention, education, and health promotion, not only strengthens the clinical and educational competencies of future physiotherapists, but also actively contributes to the well-being of the department’s working communities. Likewise, it demonstrates the University of Cauca’s commitment to contextualized and socially responsible professional education.
“The intervention at Metrex S.A. reaffirms the transformative potential of the articulation between academia and the productive sector, allowing scientific knowledge and professional practice to be translated into concrete actions that positively impact workers’ health and the sustainability of workplace environments,” concluded the professors of the Physiotherapy program at the University of Cauca.
