Pure environmental awareness! This is how we celebrate World Water Day at our Santander de Quilichao Campus

With a day dedicated to environmental reflection and action, and for the second consecutive year, Civil Engineering students from the Santander de Quilichao campus of our Alma Mater, under the academic coordination of the program and the Regionalization Center, led the celebration of World Water Day on March 31.

The Unicauca North Campus, located in the municipality of Santander de Quilichao, once again created an engaging space for reflection on the role of Civil Engineering in the conscious and sustainable use of water, addressing proposals for the protection of this resource through professional practice in this area of our department. The event featured active participation from students, professors, and administrative staff from the four academic programs offered at this campus, who attended two technical talks conducted in collaboration with the Corporation for Agricultural and Environmental Development of Cauca (CORPODACA), where the Environmental Compensation Plan derived from the Santander de Quilichao – Popayán dual carriageway works was presented.

This plan includes actions for ecological protection, restoration, and conservation on North Campus properties, as well as the protection of the valuable flora and fauna inventory at the University, simply wonderful!

Subsequently, the students led the discussion “The Future of Water in Northern Cauca: Reflections”, a space where vital questions were raised to strengthen engineering programs with topics on efficient water use and environmental sustainability in the formulation of civil projects.

It is important to mention that among the participants in the talk was Juan Camilo Mina Mina, a Civil Engineering student and councilor of the municipality of Guachené, who discussed the current challenges of water governance in the region. Later in the afternoon, a tour of the Unicauca campus ecological trail was conducted, an activity that allowed participants to appreciate the biodiversity documented by CORPODACA.

The day concluded with a “tree-planting event”, during which nearly 200 specimens of species such as yellow and pink guayacán, cámbulo, and cúcharo were planted.

“The event was successful; students from all programs participated. We had approximately 120 attendees, and the commitment shown by the participants reflects the interest of the Unicauca community in environmental protection, as well as the importance of engaging in activities that promote university life,” stated Edgar Rodríguez, professor of the Civil Engineering Program at the North Campus.

It is worth noting that World Water Day, celebrated every March 22, seeks to highlight the importance of freshwater and promote its environmental management, thereby contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for All by 2030. For this reason, these activities, in addition to contributing to this goal, strengthen university engagement and the connection between our community members, while taking advantage of the natural potential of this campus, which features an ecological trail ideal for learning and recreation.

Through these meaningful actions, the University of Cauca reaffirms its commitment to becoming a reference point in northern Cauca for environmental reflection and awareness. We celebrate this initiative with the expectation that it will be institutionalized year after year, strengthening the bond between students and their environment and promoting territorial engagement, essential elements in the comprehensive training of professionals who will contribute to a more just and sustainable society.
