Radio, more alive than ever! Unicauca Estéreo celebrated its day, embracing evolution

Radio is not the past, it is the present and, above all, the future! With this conviction, Unicauca Estéreo commemorated World’s Radio Day together with its radio collectives in a day filled with learning, dialogue, and passion for broadcasting.

In the television studio of the Communications Management Center of the University of Cauca, the talents who bring Unicauca Estéreo to life 24/7 gathered together, the sound universe of cultures. The event, which was created to celebrate World’s Radio Day, became a dynamic workshop for training and dialogue. Under the guidance of Professor Sandra Zúñiga, an expert in the field, participants explored the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on radio broadcasting: “an imminent threat or a powerful tool for the future?”

The meeting gave rise to a series of reflections on the work of radio and the challenges it faces. As pointed out by Diana Carolina Rengifo, director of the Communications Management Center of the University of Cauca, “There are people who find in radio a medium through which to express themselves and, in that sense, the station, which will soon celebrate 35 years, becomes the perfect setting to unleash that passion and demonstrate that, although radio remains relevant, it must also evolve, just as happens in every field of life.”

“There also appears our commitment as academia, since it is important that we provide these training opportunities so that those who are part of our radio station, because they belong to radio collectives, can closely learn about innovative tools such as AI. At this moment, we can no longer ignore that these are tools that complement our work, support us, and allow us to improve the quality of what we offer our listeners. Finally, I would like to highlight that events such as this one allow us to recognize the people who are part of our work team and give back to the radio collectives for the great work they carry out through quality training.”

The reflections coincided on one key point: technology advances, and radio is not removed from that reality. Therefore, it is vitally important to become familiar with and learn about the new tools offered by AI. However, emotion, identity, and human connection must not be left aside, since they continue to be the heart of radio. In this regard, the rector of the University of Cauca, Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, highlighted the role played by the station as a meeting space between academia and citizens: “What makes our station special is its plurality. Here, not only an institutional message circulates, but also an academic, cultural, and research perspective that interprets the University in all its diversity. From that conviction of building social fabric through culture, Unicauca Estéreo has consolidated itself as a space for social outreach and audience formation. Sustaining a radio initiative requires commitment, even a loving commitment, and that is precisely what those who are part of the radio collectives contribute. Many are neither staff members nor graduates, but they are deeply connected to this university community. Therefore, we want them to feel part of this public university, which is patrimonio de todos, and express our gratitude for the work that has allowed the station to position itself.”

In this way, more than a commemoration, the event became an invitation to reinvent radio, to experiment with new formats, and to lose the fear of innovation. Because making radio today is not only about speaking in front of a microphone, it is about telling stories that transform, amplifying the voices of the territory, and building community. “These training spaces are very important from the pedagogical, social, and human perspectives because they allow communities to express themselves, reflect on their work, their surroundings, and solutions to problems. In addition, they serve as guidance to facilitate educational processes, move beyond the curriculum, and pay greater attention to the events of everyday life,” stated Javier Alberto Zapata, from the Onda Mágica radio collective, visibly moved.

In conclusion, this radio gathering left a clear invitation among the participants: it is time to continue reinventing radio, experimenting with new formats, and taking advantage of technological tools without losing the essence of the medium! Along this path, Unicauca Estéreo opens its microphones to new generations, inviting young students and citizens to join the radio collectives and contribute fresh perspectives that guarantee the generational renewal of this sound space which, from the University of Cauca, continues building community and amplifying the voices of the territory.
