Research by a Unicaucano is awarded at a European Computer Vision event.

Kebin Andrés Contreras, a graduate of the Physics Engineering program and currently a student in the Master’s in Bioengineering, was awarded the Best Paper Award for the excellence and impact of his research.

Kebin Andrés Contreras, a physicist and master’s student in Bioengineering at the University of Cauca, had an outstanding participation in the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) 2024, the largest and most important event in the field of computer vision worldwide. This prestigious biennial conference brought together experts and researchers from around the globe in Milan, Italy, from September 28 to October 4, to share their latest advancements in Computer Vision and Machine Learning.

In this edition, two of Kebin Contreras’s papers were accepted for presentation in the ECCV workshops. The first, titled “High Dynamic Range Modulo Imaging for Robust Object Detection in Autonomous Driving”, was awarded the prestigious Best Paper Award, recognizing the excellence and impact of his research in the field.

“This work presents the use of modulo sensors for robust object detection. The modulo sensor allows pixels to ‘reset/wrap’ upon reaching saturation by capturing an irradiance-encoded image, which can then be recovered using unwrapping algorithms. The reconstruction techniques applied enable HDR recovery of color intensity and image details, ensuring improved visual quality even under extreme lighting conditions, albeit at the cost of additional processing time,” reads the abstract of the research paper.

The evaluation process at ECCV is extremely rigorous, and the project “High Dynamic Range Modulo Imaging for Robust Object Detection in Autonomous Driving” received an average score of 8.5, the highest recorded in its category, demonstrating the quality and relevance of its contributions. This recognition highlights Kebin Contreras’s commitment to cutting-edge research and his impact on the development of new technologies.

The European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) is a top-tier biennial research conference on computer vision and machine learning, organized by the European Computer Vision Association (ECVA). It is held in even-numbered years and brings together scientific and industrial communities from these fields. The first ECCV took place in 1990 in Antibes, France, and has since been hosted across Europe. The conference proceedings are published by Springer Science+Business Media.
