The chemistry from Unicauca truly shines abroad!

Student Duvan Arley Pete Embus received the Best Poster Award at the XI International Congress of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering, held in Havana (Cuba) from November 4 to 8, 2024.

During the 11th International Congress of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering, held in Havana, Cuba, two Unicaucanas minds were honored, proudly raising the blue and red of our institution. Duvan Arley Pete Embus, a tenth-semester student of the Chemistry program, received the Award for Best Poster, along with Professor José Antonio Gallo, who supervised the research.

Through engaging visual content, the student summarized the development of a new methodology for obtaining an eco-friendly bioadsorbent derived from the testa of Sacha Inchi, a seed native to South America with high potential for removing lead from water. Additionally, it can remove various heavy metals found in contaminated water systems.

“I am very happy, because a great effort lies behind this entire research process, and it is a source of pride to know that from the Chemistry program at the University of Cauca we are generating science and innovation that we can present at an international level,” expressed the student, visibly moved by the recognition.

The idea for the research and the poster originated from a visit to the Sacha Tambo Cooperative, located in the municipality of El Tambo (Cauca), which provided the researchers with Sacha Inchi seed husks. From this raw material, they successfully developed the bioadsorbent in question.

“We have been working for many years with different matrices to find solutions for the removal of heavy metals in various water bodies. In this case, we came up with the idea of working with Sacha Inchi and involving undergraduate students so they could develop their thesis projects around this type of initiative. As a result, we obtained extremely significant removal rates of lead from contaminated water, and the bioadsorbent also shows applications for other heavy metals such as chromium, cadmium, and mercury,” stated Professor José Antonio Gallo Corredor, researcher in the Department of Chemistry, coordinator of the Environmental Analytical Chemistry Research Group, and thesis advisor of Duván Pete.

Finally, Duvan Arley and Professor José Antonio express their gratitude to the Department of Chemistry, the Faculty of Natural, Exact and Educational Sciences, and the Research Vice-Rectory of this academic institution for providing financial support for travel and registration to attend the event. Likewise, the award-winning student calls for the promotion of science and encourages others to engage in research, as “it is very important for these new generations to seek ways to positively impact the environment, which is currently the most pressing issue we are facing.”
