Without a doubt, the talented artists shone: fourteen marimbas de chonta, singers, cununos, and various other instruments that accompanied the ensemble resonated in unison, thrilling the audience with the rhythms and cultural richness of our territories. This marimba de chonta residency was made possible thanks to the special projects carried out by the Popayán Music Festival Corporation, with the support of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Knowledge through the presidential program Sounds for Peacebuilding.
In addition, it had the support of partners such as Batuta, the Compañía Energética de Occidente, and Centro Comercial Campanario, entities that joined this important initiative aimed at strengthening artistic and musical expressions as a powerful tool for social transformation.
Maricela Cárdenas, director of special projects at the Popayán Music Festival Corporation, highlights the significant work that has been carried out through the orchestral residencies and, in this particular case, emphasizes the participants’ experience of traveling from their municipalities to the city of Popayán to share new ways of learning and knowledge around the marimba de chonta, an emblematic instrument of the department of Cauca.
A remarkable effort that promotes the strengthening of artistic abilities among Colombian youth, collective work, and harmonious coexistence, fundamental pillars in the reconstruction of the social fabric. “This is an experience that is rarely seen, especially with children. It would be pretentious to say it has never happened before, but it is quite possible, because for the first time we had fourteen marimbas de chonta performing in unison on stage, along with singers, drums, cununos, and various instruments accompanying the ensemble. In these spaces, we all learn that what we do must benefit everyone; as long as each of us has a role and supports our peers, the product and the final result, in this case, the concert, will be much better,” stated Maricela Cárdenas.
The marimba de chonta residency included among its participants children who are beneficiaries, as well as teaching artists and knowledge keepers linked to the presidential program Sounds for Peacebuilding, the largest cultural initiative of the “government of change.” This project is carried out thanks to an agreement between the University of Cauca and the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Knowledge, and for Zone 6, comprising the departments of Cauca, Huila, and Nariño, it represents the implementation of musical training processes in 227 educational institutions across the three departments, bringing arts education into school environments for 45,400 children, adolescents, and young people.
From the University of Cauca, we highlight the work that is being carried out in the territories through the implementation of this pedagogical strategy. “The teaching artists and knowledge keepers, who have always carried out this work in their daily lives, now, within the framework of the presidential program Sounds for Peacebuilding, continue, through their wisdom, to emphasize the importance of weaving, of composing music and songs, and of embracing the sensitivity, the strength, the talent, and the laughter of children in order to bring life back to the territories.
In these training processes, it is they who, guided by their convictions and principles, have believed that through music, stories, the faces of communities, sound, celebration, silence, and even lament, all pain can be transformed into strength to build peace, to uphold life, to promote joy, and to rebuild the social fabric,” stated Claudia Hurtado Triviño, Director of the Presidential Program Sounds for Peacebuilding for Zone 6.
