The Ibero-American Conference on Human–Computer Interaction bore the #UnicaucaSeal: student Manuela Gaviria proudly represented our institution and upheld its name at the highest level.

At the facilities of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, the 11th Ibero-American Human-Computer Interaction Conference (11JIHC’25) was held, an engaging event that highlighted a project featuring the participation of a Unicauca student, focused on helping the elderly navigate a given space easily and safely.

Between May 5 and 7, at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (Mexico), the 11th Ibero-American Conference on Human, Computer Interaction (11JIHC’25) took place, an event of great relevance that brought together researchers, students, and professionals from diverse fields to discuss and explore how technological evolution is redefining human and social experiences.

As part of the conference agenda, the UX-EVE Summer School was held, with the participation of students from Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. Through this activity, aimed at fostering awareness of the importance of sustainability in user experience design, students in training were responsible for presenting several proposals related to the use of technology.

The winning group was made up of Manuela Gaviria from the Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering program at the University of Cauca, along with Anyi Villalpando (Autonomous University of Zacatecas); Valentina Vargas (Nueva Granada Military University, Colombia); and Evangelina García (Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla, Mexico). These talented young women presented their proposal titled “Technology to the Rhythm of Aging: Smart and Accessible Mobility.”

“Assisted technologies play a crucial role in improving the quality of life of older adults by facilitating their independence and autonomy in daily activities. A new era in urban mobility is arriving, and its name is smart mobility. Business models inspired by the sharing economy and digital technologies are helping to create innovative ways of moving from one place to another: think of on-demand and shared transportation services such as Uber or Lyft, or car- and bike-sharing programs,” said student Manuela Gaviria.

Thus, this compelling proposal focuses on supporting the older adult population so that, through the use of a technological application, they can move around a given area easily and safely. The proposal also considers the possibility of multiple modes of transportation, allowing travelers (older adults) to choose the most suitable option for a specific context, reaching their destination with minimal effort, in the shortest possible time, and with a strong accessibility focus.

Why is this important? Because it ensures the system can be used with minimal physical and cognitive effort. In this regard, it is worth highlighting that the topic is framed within the research conducted by the IDIS group of the Faculty of Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Cauca. Additionally, the winning team will be invited to submit the proposal for publication in one of the journals associated with the 11th Ibero-American Conference on Human–Computer Interaction.

In this regard, Professor César Alberto Collazos, a member of the Ibero-American Network HCI-COLLAB, expressed his gratitude to the organizing committee of these Ibero-American Conferences for their outstanding work and dedication in bringing this remarkable event to life: “Thank you so much for creating such an enriching space for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and advances in the field of human–computer interaction in Ibero-America. The quality of the presentations, the warmth of the welcome, and the impeccable organization made these conferences a truly memorable experience.” Likewise, he recalled that this is a space for interaction and discussion that continues to grow: “Thank you for offering us such a beautiful event, which went beyond the academic and became a true space for reunion with colleagues and friends. These encounters not only nourish us professionally, but also strengthen the human bonds that make our Ibero-American HCI-COLLAB Network so special.”

Finally, from this house of learning that is #HeritageForAll, we celebrate the achievement of our student Manuela Gaviria, who, together with her team, consolidated a proposal that will undoubtedly contribute to improving the quality of life of older adults. We are filled with pride that our students and professors, from different fields, continue to hold high the blue and red of Unicauca, carrying its name to international academic arenas and thus reaffirming our commitment to research and academic excellence.
