Unicauca Estéreo: 34 years connecting knowledge and culture

Today, with hearts full of nostalgia and emotion, we want to share a story that is undoubtedly part of our own experience as a Caucan society. On March 28, 1991, in a symbolic ceremonial act held in our Francisco José de Caldas Auditorium, the broadcasts of Unicauca Estéreo officially began: the first recorded operation of the public-interest radio station affiliated with our Alma Mater dates back to that day. From that moment onward, and without interruption, we began to build together a sound legacy that has endured for more than three decades.

The anticipation during our first days of broadcasting was immense, especially because, since December 12, 1990, the first test broadcasts and technical adjustments had been carried out, as we wanted to arrive to stay. Since then, we have been committed to making our dream a daily reality: to be a platform that not only broadcasts music and news but also serves as a source of education and connection for our community! Over the years, we have undergone multiple transformations, adopting new technologies and formats, yet keeping our essence intact, as we know that our mission is focused on strengthening culture and connecting the vast knowledge of our university with those who listen to us.

We began this journey calling ourselves Radio Universidad del Cauca; a name that reflected our university identity and our service vocation. However, just as our name has evolved over time, so too have our logo, programming schedule, and the way we communicate and inform. Classical music went from being predominant in our programming to becoming one of the many soundscapes that characterize this universe, where diversity is the backbone of our daily life. Undoubtedly, every change has been a conscious step toward modernization, always maintaining focus on our roots and the desire to offer diverse, high-quality content while remaining open to new generations.

Certainly, one of the strongest memories our university community has of the U’s radio station is when its signal could be heard kilometers away. By 1992, in order to increase its power, broadcasting range, and reach the Pacific Coast and other regions of southwestern Colombia, the University of Cauca signed an agreement with the Corporation for the Reconstruction of the Department of Cauca (C.R.C.), through which financial resources were allocated to acquire new equipment, including a 10-kilowatt transmitter, impressive!

Installed on Cerro de Munchique on May 12, 1995, through a counter-service agreement with Telecom and the permission of Inravisión to use the old tower where the transmission antenna was located. Then, as you can surely notice, dear reader, it was a very important year. Why? The broadcasting schedule was expanded to 24 hours, of which 10 hours were live programs, and the rest of the programming operated pre-recorded. And although it was a wonderful time, starting in 2004 we initiated the processes aimed at technical and legal updates in accordance with the new parameters established by the Ministry of Communications, regarding the relocation of the main transmitter to the rural area of Popayán, with a maximum power of 5 kilowatts, according to its category (Public Interest Class C). As a result, we moved our transmission system from Munchique to the University’s farm, located in the La Rejoya neighborhood, from where we continue to operate today.

In this radio environment that truly carries the Unicauca stamp, we have a very broad range of action. Our journalistic spaces are an open window to local, regional, national, and international reality, while our academic programs cover essential areas such as health, literature, law, communication, tourism, economics, accounting, sports, cinema, and much more. Each broadcast is designed to attract and enrich our audience, offering a moment where information merges with entertainment, and where every listener can find something that connects with their interests and sparks their curiosity.

Thus, through effort and over these 34 years, we have built, together with our audience, a true “sound universe of cultures.” This concept not only refers to the musical and content variety we offer but also to the plurality of voices, ages, accents, perspectives, and forms of expression that inhabit our programming and define us, setting us apart from other proposals. Every day, our radio waves bring to life stories that deserve to be told, opinions that must be heard, and cultures seeking a space to leave their mark as part of history. Thanks to your constant support, we have managed to establish ourselves as the most listened-to university media outlet by opinion leaders in our region (for several consecutive years), which we consider an honor, but above all, a great responsibility.

However, as it is essential to recognize that today the role of media goes beyond merely informing, we are aware that we have the obligation to contribute to the formation of a high-quality, critical, and responsible public opinion. This is a commitment we undertake with seriousness and passion, always seeking a balance between informative rigor and entertainment, demonstrating that serious radio does not have to be boring. Our goal is that every listener who tunes in to Unicauca Estéreo feels connected, informed, and motivated to actively participate in their community.

Precisely in the pursuit of that connection with our territory, since 2013, the University of Cauca has been promoting a strategy of interaction between regions, through the concession for the provision of Public Interest Sound Broadcasting service in the municipality of Santander de Quilichao. In this way, on August 25, 2014, the Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies of Colombia – MinTIC granted approval, through Resolution 2157, for the installation and operation of the radio station with programming oriented toward Public Interest on the FM band, under the call sign HJD38, 93.6 FM, whose test broadcasts were carried out on December 20, 2022.

With two frequencies but one universe, our dream is to increasingly connect with the northern area of our beloved Cauca, with programming that reflects the university spirit, the musical diversity of the region and the country, while allowing us to weave knowledge and encounters with the diverse cultures of the inhabitants of that area of Cauca.

Over these 34 years, we have shared unforgettable moments, the launch of new programs, interviews with special guests, and celebrations of milestones. Each of these moments has been made possible thanks to the active participation of our university community, the different faculties and academic programs, all university sectors, and passionate radio collectives and producers, who have made this station a place of gathering. We are proud to know that we have been part of the lives of so many people, their education, their joys, and their challenges.

Today, looking back, we fondly remember those who have made this journey possible: our loyal listeners, our passionate collaborators, and the Unicauca community that has always supported us. Without you, none of our achievements would have come true. Your trust is our engine, and your support, our greatest treasure.

For all this and much more, today we raise our voices and celebrate in grand style these 34 years of Unicauca Estéreo, inviting you to continue being an active part of our history. Keep accompanying us on this journey through the great sound universe we have created together. Your voice matters; every comment, every suggestion, and every listen counts. We hope to keep growing together, exploring new cultures, musical styles, and topics of relevance that enrich our region.
