Bearing the #ProudlyUnicauca seal, the final of the Huawei ICT Competition 2024–2025 will take place, an internationally renowned event scheduled to be held later this month in China. Therefore, on May 6, at the main auditorium of the Murillo Toro Building in Bogotá, the Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (MinTIC) held a ceremony of recognition and farewell for the students of our Alma Mater who will represent Colombia.

The tribute, presided over by the Minister of ICT, Julián David Molina; the Ambassador of China to Colombia, Zhu Jingyang; and the President of the Colombian Chamber of Informatics and Telecommunications (CCIT), Alberto Yohai, included an emotional panel highlighting the experiences and expectations of the students who will participate in the international final of the Huawei ICT Competition 2024–2025. This panel, moderated by Yohai, featured the participation of the Rector of the University of Cauca, Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, and students Juan Manuel David, Erika Valencia (Cloud Track), and Fabián Pérez (Network Track). In this regard, Juan Manuel David Pérez, a member of the Cloud team, expressed enthusiastically: “It is an opportunity to demonstrate that from our university and from regions that often do not have as much visibility in the technological field, young people are also being trained with the skills and potential to take on global-level challenges. This reflects the value of public education and the dedication with which students and faculty work day by day to continue moving forward.”

For her part, Professor Catalina Muñoz, coordinator of the Huawei Academy at the Alma Mater of Cauca, proudly stated, “It is very gratifying that the work carried out with the students bears fruit and allows them to reach these stages of the competition.” Without a doubt, this recognition not only celebrates an academic achievement, but also becomes a national milestone, since the two teams that will represent Colombia in the final this year are students from the University of Cauca, making it the only institution in the country to qualify for the world stage of the competition. “I feel enormously proud and privileged to be able to represent an institution that is a national heritage, such as the University of Cauca, which was founded by General Santander and General Bolívar in 1827, meaning we are on the verge of celebrating 200 years, and a university that has educated 17 presidents of the country and, since 1961, when it created its Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications, has been fundamental in the training of engineers who are undoubtedly contributing to nation-building and regional development,” stated Deibar René Hurtado, Rector of the University of Cauca.

And since this good news is the result of committed work and the effort of a group of highly talented young people, it would be impossible not to highlight that the path to this moment began in September 2024, when dozens of students registered for the competition. After overcoming the qualifying stage in January 2025, the two teams were formed:

  • Network Team, with the participation of Mauricio Peña Bambague, Fabián Alexander Pérez Jiménez, and Bryan Andrés Suárez Sánchez.
  • Cloud Team, made up of Erika Valencia Arango, Juan Manuel David Pérez, and Deiby Zair Melo Olivar.

In February, during the national stage of the competition, both teams excelled, securing first place in Cloud and second place in Network, which allowed them to advance to the regional stage. This stage took place in March and included universities from Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. There, our students from the University of Cauca once again stood out, earning second place in Cloud and third place in Network. Thanks to these results, they are now preparing for the world finals in China, an opportunity not only to showcase their talent, but also to represent Colombia and public higher education in the country’s southwest.

But of course, this is nothing new for our alma mater: 2024–2025 marks the fourth consecutive participation of the University of Cauca in the global final of the Huawei ICT Competition, so let’s refresh our memory. In 2021–2022, the Network Team represented us; in 2022–2023, both the Network and Cloud Teams took part; in 2023–2024, the protagonists were once again the Network Team; and in 2024–2025, the flag will be carried by both the Network and Cloud Teams.

Each achievement attained is a testament to the tireless effort of our students, the firm support of a University that believes in its people, and a conviction that strongly guides us: from this little corner of Colombia, high-quality knowledge is also created, marked by talent and with global impact! Today, with hearts full of pride, we celebrate their journey and send them our best wishes for this new stage, confident that they will continue to uphold the name of the University of Cauca and prove that dreams born in the department of Cauca also transform the world. The future of the technological field is in the best hands! And guys, although you are already winners, we will be waiting for you at the end of the month as world champions.
