Unicauca present at the Eighth Annual Conference of the Memory Studies Association (MSA)

Unicauca present at the Eighth Annual Conference of the Memory Studies Association (MSA)

With the presentation “Reconstruction of Cultural Memory through the Juga, a Traditional Dance from Northern Cauca,” Professor Claudia Patricia Burbano Astaiza represented the University of Cauca at the annual conference of the Memory Studies Association (MSA), held at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru in Lima, from July 18 to 20, 2024.

Under the theme “Memories in Transit,” the Memory Studies Association held its Eighth Conference at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru in Lima, with the aim of exploring how memories move across different contexts and temporalities, influencing social phenomena such as inequalities, racism, exclusion, and migration. Within this framework, Professor Claudia Patricia Burbano, from the Regionalization Formative Physical Activity Program, had an outstanding participation with her presentation titled “Reconstruction of Cultural Memory through the Traditional Juga Dance of Northern Cauca.”

In her presentation, this University of Cauca representative discussed the importance of the Traditional Juga Dance of Northern Cauca, a choreographic performance enacted during events such as the celebrations in honor of the Christ Child and various festivities within the community. This dance is a reflection of the processes of resistance and freedom of the Afro-descendant communities of northern Cauca, being the only dance from the department that shows no Spanish influence, as it is not performed in pairs.

“At the beginning, it was called fuga (escape) due to the meaning given by their ancestors, who used it as a way to escape from enslaving haciendas. They braided escape routes into the women’s hair, which they covered with turbans so the Spaniards would not discover them, and through the choreography, they reviewed the escape maps. Once the period of slavery ended, the communities named it Juga, linking it to spaces of play or recreation that allowed them to remember their ancestors and preserve their knowledge, customs, and identity,” expressed Professor Claudia with pride. She also added, “Representing the University of Cauca was a great satisfaction for me. Being able to share with universities from around the world the work being carried out at our Alma Mater, where the reconstruction of cultural memory based on the experiences of students from the North of Cauca contributes to the recognition of Afro communities in the region, is something truly gratifying. I am grateful for the support the university has given me to carry out this research.”

Thus, it is important to mention that Professor Claudia holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Basic Education with an Emphasis in Physical Education, Recreation, and Sports; she is a Specialist in Play Pedagogy, has a Master’s Degree in Education, and is a Doctoral Candidate in Education. In addition to her strong academic background, since 2015 she has worked on cultural topics, sharing her knowledge through presentations in countries such as France, Spain, Mexico, and now Peru, contributing to the preservation of cultural identity through traditional dance.

She was also a pioneer of dance research groups (semilleros) at Unicauca and participated in the creation of the first MOOC on folk dance thanks to the MOOC Mentes project at the University of Cauca, upon the invitation of Dr. Gustavo Ramírez from the Telematics Department, of which she was a part in 2018. Adding to her extensive curriculum, she also received a very special distinction, as she was honored by Universidad Los Libertadores with the LIBERTADORA award for her work in safeguarding the cultural identity of Cauca.

From our academic home, where we make dreams come true and transform lives, we celebrate the participation of our educators in diverse international academic settings. Initiatives as meaningful as Memory Studies have a significant impact on regions as diverse as Cauca, the department where we are located and whose development we are deeply committed to. Therefore, we invite all our professors to share their experiences, which serve as inspiration for their colleagues to continue developing research and projects that leave a lasting mark.
