The University of Cauca delivered nearly five tons of obsolete electrical and electronic equipment during the 12th Post-used Collection Journey, organized by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cauca (CRC) on August 28 and 29.This participation reflects the institution’s commitment to sustainability and to the proper disposal of waste which, if not handled appropriately, can generate negative impacts on health and the environment.

A total of 1,178 pieces of equipment were collected, including computers, printers, photocopiers, projectors, refrigerators, and other peripherals. These items had previously been processed through the University’s internal inventory decommissioning procedures, ensuring responsible management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

The collection and transportation of these materials were made possible through coordination with the CRC and the support of the companies Lumina and Litio, which provided the logistics free of charge to transfer the waste to authorized managers, thus ensuring its proper final disposal.

“This type of action demonstrates the commitment of the University of Cauca to the Sustainable Development Goals and to building a strong environmental culture within the university community,” stated Alexander Buendía, Director of the Center for Quality Management and Institutional Accreditation (CGCAI).

Participation in this initiative is not an isolated event. The University has taken part in all twelve editions of the Post-used Collection Journey led by the CRC, consolidating a process of environmental co-responsibility that goes beyond administrative actions and extends to students, faculty members, and administrative staff.

In this sense, university environmental management is directly connected to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The delivery of WEEE is linked to SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, by reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills; to SDG 13, Climate Action, by contributing to the prevention of environmental risks; and to SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, by promoting responsible practices within the campus.

“Our goal is for the University not only to properly dispose of its institutional waste, but also to promote responsible practices among students, faculty, and administrative staff. Environmental management must permeate all dimensions of university life,” stated Alexandra Muñoz, coordinator of the Environmental Management area of the CGCAI.

One of the lessons learned from the initiative was the need to expand communication and awareness channels regarding environmental culture within the University. To move forward with this purpose, the University has put into operation an institutional eco-point, located at the entrance of the new Engineering building, which will allow the entire community to dispose of batteries, lighting fixtures, pesticide containers, and household electronic equipment.

The eco-point aims to become a permanent post-used management space and a pedagogical resource that reinforces the importance of separating waste and disposing of it properly, preventing it from ending up in common trash. This strategy also supports the strengthening of the circular economy and the promotion of sustainable habits in both academic and administrative settings.

More than numbers, a lasting commitment

The delivery of nearly five tons of waste not only prevented hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, and mercury from reaching soils and water sources, but also created the opportunity to recover reusable materials that can be reintegrated into recycling processes. In this way, the University contributes to the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems by reducing risks to both people and the environment.

Beyond the immediate results, participation in the 12th Post-used Collection Journey reaffirms that sustainability is a cross-cutting priority for the University of Cauca. Every campaign, every eco-point, and every awareness action represents a concrete step toward building a more responsible, resilient campus committed to its environment.

The University invites the entire academic community to remain actively engaged in these initiatives. Properly disposing of a battery, a light fixture, or an unused device may seem like a simple gesture, but it carries significant environmental and social impact.

Through these everyday actions, we contribute to consolidating a culture of care that responds to global challenges and positions the University of Cauca as a leading institution in terms of sustainability.
