The University of Cauca, in collaboration with Corporación Lumina and thanks to the joint efforts of the Environmental Management Technical Committee, led by the Center for Quality Management and Institutional Accreditation, has installed a specialized container for the disposal of post-consumer waste at the José María Serrano Prada Library, located within the Faculty of Natural, Exact, and Education Sciences. This action is part of the institution’s efforts to strengthen sustainable environmental practices and raise awareness about the proper disposal of special waste, thereby contributing to environmental conservation.
The container, provided by Lumina, is intended to collect post-consumer waste such as used batteries, electrical and electronic equipment, and fluorescent light bulbs. Its installation seeks to provide the student and academic community with an appropriate space for disposing of these items, preventing them from being discarded with regular waste or recycled improperly.
Proper disposal of post-consumer waste is essential to mitigate negative environmental impacts. If managed inappropriately, this type of waste can release toxic substances that contaminate water, soil, and air. Moreover, correct disposal enables the recovery of recyclable materials that can be reused in the manufacture of new products, contributing to the circular economy.
How to Properly Classify Post-Consumer Waste?
The University’s Environmental Management Operational Team highlights the importance of correctly classifying post-consumer waste in order to maximize environmental benefits and prevent the contamination of other types of waste.
Batteries: All types of batteries, such as alkaline, rechargeable, and lithium batteries, must be deposited in the section specifically designated for them.
Fluorescent light bulbs: These bulbs must be handled with care due to their fragility and mercury content. Incandescent and LED bulbs should not be deposited in the same compartment as fluorescent bulbs. It is important to ensure that the bulbs are not broken before depositing them, in order to avoid accidents and the release of toxic gases.
Electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE): Devices such as cell phones, chargers, headphones, and small household appliances also have a designated compartment in the container. Make sure not to mix cables or chargers with other types of waste.
From the University of Cauca, a call is made to the entire university community to actively participate in this initiative. “With this container, we not only promote a culture of responsible recycling, but also seek to raise awareness among students, teaching staff, and administrative personnel about the importance of proper management of special waste, which requires different treatment to prevent harm to the natural environment,” explained Alexandra Muñoz, coordinator of the Environmental Management area.
