Unicauca welcomes a new generation of students: more than 1700 dreams begin to be woven thanks to higher education

Welcoming 1,556 new students in Popayán and 161 in Santander de Quilichao, the University of Cauca began the second academic semester of 2024. The reception took place as part of FestiU, “Getting to Know Your Home,” a full celebration organized by the Vice-Rectorate of Culture and Wellbeing, held during the week of July 29 to August 2.

In this house of thought, we understand that change is not easy. Facing a new stage of life, adapting to urban life, moving to another city, distancing ourselves a bit from our families and parents, opening ourselves up to forming new relationships and seeking friends, is quite a challenge. However, it is a path worth taking, as it will help us fulfill our greatest dreams and provide us with many more opportunities to transform our lives, those of our families, and even the reality of that small town we left behind. This is why, from the University of Cauca, we create very special days, seeking to make them unforgettable, because there is no better way to welcome you to this institution, which will be your home for the coming years.

“We have organized a welcome celebration for you. We are happy because we have fulfilled the dream that you become Unicaucan@s; the dream that you can have an opportunity to enrich your lives through this educational experience and transform realities,” were the words of Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera as he received the new undergraduate students who gathered on Monday, July 29 at the Tulcán University Sports Center in the capital of the department of Cauca to begin this new adventure. For her part, Dr. Aída Patricia Gonzales Nieva, Academic Vice-Rector, shared a brief but inspiring speech: “Do not waste this opportunity, do not lose a single moment to enjoy the University, because when we enjoy the University, it transforms us, it changes our personalities, it gives us a unique vision of reality. Let’s make this University a home that inspires us…”

“…that guarantees us a space free from all types of violence, a home where we build and rethink this society, because it can be better and it must be better. So, welcome girls, boys, and everyone to the University of Cauca.”

Likewise, Maestro César Alfaro Mosquera, Vice Rector for Culture and Well-Being and host of #FestiU, offered some welcoming words to this new generation of dreamers, emphasizing the services offered by this vital Vice-Rectory, which stands as one of the most important allies in this educational process, since through its different divisions and programs, “we seek for students to feel well so they can develop their abilities and have good performance during their studies.” Likewise, the student representatives and different collectives joined this celebration, giving a warm welcome to the new Unicaucanos, reminding them that many of them have been in their place and that, during this process of change, they can count on these spaces to continue developing their leadership and sense of unity.

And as part of the full agenda, the Vice-Rectory of Culture and Well-Being launched the “Well-Being Circuits,” integration spaces in which, through dynamics and playful activities, the students were able to learn in detail everything that our institution offers them.

“I really liked the welcome. I was at another university and didn’t see the same thing, so I found it very pleasant, besides the fact that this campus where they received us is very beautiful. I also liked the different groups that exist and what will take place throughout this whole week. At least tomorrow there will also be some games, and I am excited to participate,” said Valentina Ordoñez Torres, a new student in the Forestry Engineering program, originally from the city of Barrancabermeja, who has decided to continue her life project at this almost two-hundred-year-old University of southwestern Colombia.

Additionally, a welcome space was organized for the parents, a tradition that we have cultivated for a long time, as we recognize the importance of family support in the educational process of our students, an excellent way to involve parents and keep them informed about every stage of the educational path that their daughters and sons will take.

But, since in northern Cauca there is another essential part of our Alma Mater, on Thursday, August 1, it was time to welcome those who will inhabit our Santander de Quilichao campus, where for this semester we welcomed 161 students who have seen in this institution an ally to fulfill their greatest dreams. Just like in Popayán, the Vice-Rectory of Culture and Well-Being was in charge of providing the warmest induction to the new students.

The administrators offered them words of encouragement and assured them that they will not be alone in this process. This marked the beginning of a two-day session in which the institution was presented, along with the services it offers and the opportunities available, all through special activities that ended with the awarding of the yincana and a great concert that filled this new generation of students with joy and excitement.

In this way, once again, this house of thought opens its doors to its students with the hope that, semester after semester, more will join us in building great dreams. We aspire to train professionals who not only contribute to social transformation and the building of an inclusive society, but who also drive the pursuit of the long-desired peace. Our commitment is to foster an academic community dedicated to working tirelessly for a more just and equitable society, where every contribution is a step toward a better future for our region and our country.

Welcome once again to this, your home, the University of Cauca: we are excited to have the possibility and fortune to walk this path together!
