The University of Cauca was established in Popayán as the University of the Third District by decree on April 24, 1827. On April 5, 2013, the Ministry of National Education granted the University Institutional High-Quality Accreditation for a period of six years. Subsequently, through Resolution No. 6218 of June 13, 2019, the Ministry renewed the University’s Institutional High-Quality Accreditation for a period of eight years.
The University traces its origins to the Major Seminary of Popayán, founded between 1609 and 1617. It was a leading educational institution during the colonial period, operating in the San José Cloister, where the most innovative philosophical, political, and scientific ideas of the Enlightenment, the Age of Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, had a profound influence.
It was there that the generation who would later lead the struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire was educated. This generation included figures such as Francisco José de Caldas, Camilo Torres, Francisco Antonio Zea, José María Cabal, Joaquín de Caycedo y Cuero, and Francisco Antonio Ulloa, statesmen, scholars, and public servants. A significant part of the intellectual foundation of Colombia’s republican and independent life was shaped at the University of Cauca. Consequently, the history of Colombia’s independence and its emergence as an independent republic is closely intertwined with the history of the University.
In keeping with that tradition, the University of Cauca continues to be an institution dedicated to knowledge, progress, and the free exchange of ideas concerning the challenges and opportunities of social life. It remains committed to defending Colombia’s democratic values while consistently promoting freedom of expression and citizen participation. Over the past decade, it has also distinguished itself through the dynamism and growth of its research structure.
The University of Cauca is a public, autonomous institution of higher education at the national level, established during the founding years of the Republic of Colombia. Rooted in its tradition and historical legacy, the University of Cauca is a cultural project with a lasting commitment to social development through critical, responsible, and creative education.
The University educates individuals with ethical integrity, professional competence, and relevance, fostering democratic citizens committed to the well-being of society and to living in harmony with their environment.
The University of Cauca generates and disseminates science, engineering, technology, art, and culture through teaching, research, and social engagement.
Faithful to its motto, Posteris Lvmen Moritvrvs Edat (“Let those who are to die leave their light to posterity”), the University of Cauca maintains a historic, enduring, and unwavering commitment to building a fair and equitable society through the education of well-rounded, ethical, and socially responsible individuals.
