Thus begins a semester.
It does not begin on paper. It begins in that intimate gesture of someone who decides, once again, to teach.
In this here and now that we inhabit, our hic et nunc, starting a new academic period may seem routine. But it is not. Teaching, in a public university, is never routine. It is an ethical choice that is renewed every semester. A silent decision that says: it is worth continuing to believe in knowledge, in dialogue, in education as a form of dignity.
As we move toward the Bicentennial, that long history that began in 1827 is not sustained only by dates or archives. It is sustained by you. By the professors who persist until a concept becomes clear and who accompany a student when difficulty threatens to push them off their path. By those who conduct research without fanfare and patiently build answers for a territory that needs them.
The University of Cauca is the moment when an idea, after being contemplated for some time, finally takes shape. That instant when something falls into place within. No one announces it. Yet that is where everything makes sense.
We have said it before, and I reaffirm it today with even greater conviction: our people are the most valuable asset of this institution. It is not a phrase for the wall. It is a fact. Without the faculty, there is no possible institutional project. There is no excellence, no autonomy, no future.
The country is going through times that demand composure and focus. The region calls for critical thinking and genuine commitment. And in the midst of this context, there you are. Shaping judgment, character, and awareness, even when the environment offers no respite.
In this semester that begins, the invitation is not grandiloquent. It is concrete. Continue preparing each class as if it were decisive. Listen with genuine attention. Assess with fairness. Conduct research with integrity. Work collaboratively. Prioritize what is essential. Care for the public good.
Because when you prepare a class, when you persist until an idea becomes clear, when you accompany without drawing attention, you are doing more than fulfilling an academic task. You are sustaining the trust that this region has placed in its University: the history that precedes us and the present that, in each class, reaffirms who we are.
And that responsibility, assumed with rigor and humanity, is what allows us to reach the Bicentennial not as an institution that merely commemorates its past, but as a community that has risen to the demands of its time.
My gratitude is sincere. And my confidence, absolute.
Thank you, once again, for being here. I wish us a successful year, full of meaningful and rewarding stories to tell.
