Students from the SIPRÉS research group experienced a formative visit at the FAREVA Villa Rica plant, where they closely explored industrial, environmental, and quality control processes, strengthening the connection between academia and the productive sector

As part of its commitment to research training connected to real-world contexts, the Research Group in Electrochemical and Separation Processes (SIPRÉS), affiliated with the GIPEL Research Group of the University of Cauca, carried out an academic visit to the industrial plant of FAREVA Villa Rica, in Santander de Quilichao.

The visit became a space for experiential learning, where the nine students of the research group were able to contrast theory with practice and understand how chemical processes are integrated into the pharmaceutical industry. Throughout the tour, they closely explored strategies implemented for industrial wastewater treatment, responsible management of solid waste, and the use of clean energy, key aspects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in terms of health, environmental sustainability, and innovation.

One of the most significant moments was the entry into the instrumentation laboratories, where students interacted with specialized equipment such as HPLC, UPLC, ICP, and IR. There, chemistry ceased to be an abstract concept and became a concrete tool in ensuring the quality of pharmaceutical and personal care products.

Beyond technical learning, the visit opened doors to strengthening ties between the University of Cauca and the industrial sector. New connections were established for future professional internships, as well as for potential joint research projects aimed at developing solutions from academia. “Through these approaches, we have opened new opportunities to strengthen links between industry and academia. This translates into promoting professional internships for our Chemistry students, as well as the development of joint research projects and new interinstitutional collaborations,” stated Professor Tania Milena Gutiérrez.

In this context, the SIPRÉS research group continues advancing in the development of analytical methodologies for the environmental monitoring of NSAID-type pharmaceuticals, using functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles. As part of this process, students collected water samples before and after the treatments applied by the industry, contributing to the understanding of the impact of these compounds on water sources.

The SIPRÉS research group also highlighted the support of the Vice Presidency for Research (VRI), whose backing in student mobility made this experience possible, reaffirming the institutional commitment to research training and engagement with real-world contexts.

Thus, in alignment with its second strategic axis, the University of Cauca reaffirms its commitment to an education that generates potential and opens opportunities, promoting the comprehensive training of its students and the strengthening of capacities that positively impact the social, scientific, and cultural development of the region and the country.
