Dr. Hernando Vargas Uricoechea, full professor at the University of Cauca and director of the Research Group on Metabolic Diseases, will be honored with the International Environmental Scientists Award in the category “Best Researcher Award.” This internationally renowned distinction, granted by a panel of experts, recognizes research careers in various fields of knowledge, such as medicine, agronomy, engineering, environmental impact, sociology, and anthropology. “It is a very important achievement because, at the international level, both individuals and research groups are acknowledged for their contributions and efforts,” stated Professor Vargas, visibly moved. The award ceremony will take place in December in the city of Agra, India, in the northern region of the country, on a date yet to be confirmed.

Thus, for our institution, it is both a source of pride and an ongoing mission to highlight the outstanding academic work of Professor Vargas, who is a physician specialized in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, holds a master’s degree in Epidemiology, a Ph.D. in Health Sciences, and is currently a candidate for a Ph.D. in Applied Cognitive Neuroscience. In addition to serving as coordinator of the postgraduate program in Internal Medicine, he has led research in key areas such as autoimmune thyroid diseases, metabolic disorders related to iodine and vitamin D, diabetes mellitus, and lipid metabolism disorders. “It is very gratifying that efforts such as these are recognized internationally, as the University of Cauca deserves full credit for being a platform that drives the export of knowledge and meaningful contributions to scientific advancement. This award not only highlights our work as a research group, but also reflects the institution’s fundamental role in allowing us to contribute, through our studies, a small grain of sand to global knowledge,” emphasized Professor Vargas.
