The organization that brings together 69 Faculties and University Programs in Communication is ready to bring together students, professors, and researchers around this specialized field. This is the 7th National and International Communication Congress and the 9th Research Seedbeds Meeting, AFACOM 2025, which will take place on March 26, 27, and 28, 2025, in the city of Popayán. The event is organized by the Social Communication programs of the University of Cauca, Corporación Universitaria Comfacauca, and Fundación Universitaria de Popayán, in coordination with the Colombian Association of Faculties and University Programs in Communication – AFACOM.
This seventh edition of the Congress will be held under the theme “Communication in Plural: Cultures, Territories, and Memories (knowledges, conversations, and practices),” addressing the diversity of communication areas from both academic training and professional practice in teaching, research, and social outreach. In this academic space, professors, researchers, and student research groups will present progress or final results of projects carried out in different regions of the country. Participants may attend either as speakers or as audience members in academic activities and discussion panels, where the richness characterizing academic work in communication as a field of study will be reflected upon. The event will explore multiple epistemic approaches, training traditions, methodological experiences, and research practices that converge, dialogue, or contrast within the Colombian and Latin American context.
“This event is important because, for the first time, the Social Communication Program is hosting a congress with a national call and international participation, featuring four prominent guests in the fields of communication and social sciences: Carlos Scolari, Rossana Reguillo, Gabriel Kaplún, and Graciela Martínez. Each will address communicative and social phenomena through two activities: a keynote lecture and thematic conversations with a limited audience of interested participants,” stated Felipe García, Social Communication professor at the University of Cauca and current Department Head.
Regarding the participation of Unicaucanos in the event, Professor García noted that professors will present their papers and serve as session moderators. He added, “There is significant and meaningful participation from alumni, as they are professors, colleagues from allied universities, and some of them also work with us. Therefore, this is not an insular perspective or attitude, but rather a recognition of the contributions and work developed by our graduates.”
Without a doubt, the University of Cauca is proud to be one of the hosts of this important gathering, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Social Communication as a key field of study and professional practice. Hosting AFACOM 2025 represents an opportunity to promote the exchange of knowledge, highlight the diverse perspectives that enrich the discipline, and contribute to building a more plural and inclusive approach to communication, especially considering that our institution has been training leading communication professionals for 25 years. Through this initiative, the University continues to consolidate itself as a space for academic reflection and dialogue, contributing to the development of critical thinking and the projection of social communication both locally and nationally.
