Being part of the University of Cauca means inhabiting a space that demands constant transformation and evolution, a critical review of our knowledge, and the deconstruction of practices that, at times, perpetuate or reproduce exclusion and violence. For this reason, adopting a respectful stance toward sexual and gender diversity is not only an ethical act; it is a tangible manifestation of our commitment to building a more just and equitable society. And if you ask, why do we join this discussion? The answer is simple: the university is a space for reflection, but also for progress.
Thus, as an institution with nearly two centuries of history, the University of Cauca has taken steps that, although they may seem small to some, are very significant. How? By promoting various processes of development and inclusion. That is why The Magic of Being highlights that these advances have been supported by our diversity; the very diversity that is constitutive of who we are. However, we know that we still face great challenges and that a long road remains ahead: only by eradicating all forms of violence can we build a truly safe university for everyone.
Indeed, without a doubt, throughout these nearly 200 years of history, we have cultivated a valuable legacy built by a diverse population that has opened spaces within our institution. It is therefore essential to recognize and honor this legacy, as its existence and resilience have been pillars that allow us today to celebrate the pride of being diverse.
From this house of thought, we aim to make visible the diversity that shapes us and contribute to the understanding of vital aspects such as inclusive language, name changes, and bodily autonomy, all part of the natural path the world is experiencing! Moreover, these are topics that emerge daily in our university environments, especially when someone shares their pronouns or requests recognition according to their gender identity or sexual orientation. These transformations are an integral part of our institutional development and our commitment to peacebuilding.
It is important to note that some members of our community are more familiar with these transformations than others. Therefore, it is essential that everyone, all, everyone, and allies, move toward a safe environment where the ability to Be is a reality. In this sense, the 2025 edition of this pedagogical campaign, now entering its third consecutive year, will focus on deciphering collective cues that help us continue advancing toward building a truly inclusive University. Over the coming days, we will be sharing content through our communication channels, and we invite you to follow us to find guidance that brings us closer to this shared purpose.
How much do you know about this topic? Below, we present some basic guidelines to foster a respectful and safe environment for everyone. First, it is recommended to use the name and pronouns that a person indicates, as this corresponds to a fundamental right related to the recognition of identity. Second, it is important to avoid invasive questions about personal aspects such as legal names, medical procedures, health records, or other intimate matters. Third, if you witness a situation in which someone does not respect this request, it is possible to intervene respectfully, thereby contributing to the strengthening of safer and more inclusive environments. Fourth, if at any point you find it difficult to incorporate this information, it is valid to acknowledge it, as communicating honestly that you are in a learning process, and that unintentional mistakes may occur, is also part of the change.
These guidelines are just the beginning; being part of our University means being on a continuous journey of knowledge and learning. Understanding that gender identities and expressions are diverse and constantly evolving leads us, as the Unicaucana community, to assume a shared responsibility toward a broader, more respectful, and empathetic understanding.
In conclusion, the pride we commemorate in June is not only about flags or celebrations, but about resistance, the construction of the future, and reflections that permeate our classrooms, our hallways, our words, and our everyday gestures. Therefore, we extend an open invitation to think, feel, and act from a place of respect and mutual recognition, making every university space an opportunity to contribute to a more just and compassionate society.
As you now know: in this edition of The Magic of Being, we want to share with the entire university community an invitation to continue learning and growing together, all together, in every sense, because in this house of thought that is #HeritageOfAll, being also means having the power to change, and having the power to change is itself an act of pride. At Unicauca, we celebrate and embrace our diversity!
