The University of Cauca enthusiastically celebrates the approval of Datecol 4.0, an ambitious national big data megaproject that will impact the health and energy sectors. Through the Catalysis Group of the Faculty of Natural, Exact and Education Sciences, the University positions itself as a key actor in this initiative, which has been selected among the ten most outstanding proposals in Call 35 of the General System of Royalties (SGR). This achievement not only highlights the Institution’s commitment, but also recognizes the valuable scientific work being carried out in the department of Cauca.

With the aim of developing an open-access, validated big data platform focused on promoting predictive medicine and energy efficiency, strategic areas for social well-being and the country’s economic development, we are advancing Datecol 4.0. This project seeks to integrate 4.0 technologies with the basic sciences, strengthening national scientific sovereignty through the creation of contextualized knowledge relevant to Colombia’s needs.

For Professor Alfonso Ramírez, from the Department of Chemistry and project coordinator at the University of Cauca, this designation is a source of deep pride and a great institutional responsibility. “It is a great honor, since out of the many proposals submitted, only ten were approved. It is also a challenge, as the Catalysis Group assumes the responsibility of contributing to the growth of the Natural Sciences through the training of human capital and the generation of new knowledge. In addition, it is a great satisfaction because institutional infrastructure is strengthened and financial resources are secured for the University,” he emphasized, notably moved.

Thus, the Catalysis Group will play a strategic role in the development of the project, focused on three major axes: the generation of knowledge through the production of scientific articles in high-impact journals (quartile 1); the training of human talent at undergraduate and graduate levels, including the incorporation of a Young Researcher; and the social appropriation of knowledge through actions to disseminate advances and results to the community. These activities will be carried out through the synthesis of materials with catalytic properties, applicable to chemical reactions of interest, mainly under the principles of circular chemistry.

And this good news undoubtedly represents a major milestone, why? Within the framework of strengthening research infrastructure, during the first 24 months of the project’s execution, this Alma Mater will receive state-of-the-art scientific equipment for the analysis of products from chemical reactions carried out in the laboratory. Among these, the acquisition of a separation system is planned, such as a gas chromatograph with various detection systems, which will make it possible to raise analytical standards and the group’s technical capabilities. Hence, thanks to these new capacities, the region will continue advancing in the development of solid carbon-based materials with two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures, obtained from agro-industrial residues such as coffee husks, as well as in the understanding of their synthesis methods, thereby opening new opportunities for innovative applications in energy processes and solutions with potential impact in the health sector, under an approach of sustainability and circular economy.

With this commitment, the University of Cauca—on the path to its bicentennial—reaffirms its dedication to strengthening national scientific capacities and to generating knowledge aimed at closing technological gaps, fostering innovation, and promoting social well-being. Participation in Datecol 4.0 also consolidates the role of our Institution as a key actor in the articulation between science, technology, and territory, by contributing developments that can be translated into real solutions to the country’s energy and health challenges. In this way, the University of Cauca not only enhances its research infrastructure and the training of new researchers, but also projects itself as a benchmark in the use of emerging technologies with social responsibility, promoting initiatives that strengthen Colombian scientific sovereignty and encourage a more hopeful tomorrow where sustainable growth prevails. Congratulations to those who made it possible, and much success in the implementation of this challenging project!
