About the Graduate Studies Center

The Graduate Studies Center of the University of Cauca offers Doctoral, Master’s, and Specialization programs to national and international professionals, with the purpose of contributing to professional development and to research lines that address regional and national interests, with international rigor and perspective.

Created in 2011 and restructured in 2012 by the institution’s Superior Council, in accordance with its legal and statutory powers. The Center’s main function is to support training processes at the levels of specialization programs, medical and surgical specializations, master’s programs, and doctoral programs, with a rigorous and international approach, in order to promote students’ professional and research development and address regional and national interests.

Mission

The Graduate Studies Center of the University of Cauca, made up of individuals of integrity, responsible and committed to social, intellectual, and technological growth, offers Doctoral, Master's, and Specialization academic programs to university professionals from Colombia and abroad in order to contribute to their academic education, ethical integrity, sense of belonging, development, and professional competence.

Vision

To be a leader in southwestern Colombia by offering graduate programs recognized for their high quality standards, with faculty members of integrity, ethical, competent, and committed to the generation, construction, and application of knowledge to educate outstanding professionals who contribute to the progress and development of society.

General objective

To establish an articulated, high-quality university graduate education system based on the principles of equity, transparency, and institutional collaboration. We seek to overcome the current fragmentation of programs by promoting the efficient use of resources and collaboration among departments, research groups, and the Vice-Rectorate for Research. Our objective is for graduate programs to be fully integrated into the University model, guided by a strategic academic plan, and to contribute to regional and national development with international standards of excellence.

Principles

The consolidation of an appropriate, broad, and flexible institutional framework for action that provides equitable conditions for the harmonious development of graduate programs.

Fluid academic-administrative communication among departments, research groups, program committees, faculty councils, research areas, and the Graduate Studies Center.

The recognition, support, and strengthening of the acknowledged capacities of departments and research groups in the development of the institution’s structures, resources, and policies, and in agreements with entities and academic programs of international prestige.

Contribution to professional development and research lines that address regional and national interests, with international rigor and perspective.

The gradual implementation of graduate programs offered through academic credits.

Quality, transparency, reliability, suitability, responsibility, and timeliness.

The Graduate Studies Center, Respecting the Diversity of Programs and Their Dynamics, Seeks to:

Overcome the isolation that prevents the rational use of the available and necessary resources for proper functioning within the University context and for the structuring and development of higher-quality programs.

Overcome the lack of coordination by creating a university graduate education system that articulates the University units which, by their nature and function, are called upon to contribute to the development of graduate studies, such as departments, their research groups, and the Vice-Rectorate for Research.

Achieve better use of institutional resources, especially human talent, existing educational resources and facilities, and economies of scale, in order to avoid the duplication and parallel implementation of activities. Make graduate programs an essential component of higher education.

Avoid ad hoc planning.

Ensure that advanced education is guided by a strategic academic plan in which the cultural capital of institutionally available knowledge and expertise takes precedence.

Join efforts to ensure that research master’s programs and doctoral programs have greater articulation with research groups.

It is worth noting that the University of Cauca has the necessary conditions to achieve the stated objectives due to its significant administrative, academic, and research experience, the required human talent, and the educational and physical resources it possesses.

Furthermore, it is academically recognized at the regional, national, and international levels, as it is guided by the necessary criteria for research and, consequently, education at the specialization, master’s, and doctoral levels to become an integral part of the University model. In this way, it provides the necessary conditions for some graduate studies to cease being occasional activities and become part of the dynamics of academic development.
