Program Description

Ethnobiology is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scientific discipline, rooted in biology and anthropology, among other fields, dedicated to the analysis of biological entities and their cultural interrelationships. Its purpose is to identify, describe, classify, and interpret the cultural conceptions that peoples hold regarding the components of nature and their social value, with a focus on practices aimed at biological and cultural conservation to ensure the continuity of life and of the societies that carry them out.

Learn about our Study Plan and become part of the University of Cauca community.

Studying the Doctoral Program in Ethnobiology allows you to explore the interconnection between biology and anthropology, analyzing how cultures interpret and value nature. This approach prepares you to research and describe cultural practices that promote biodiversity conservation and the continuity of societies. In addition, you will gain an understanding of how human communities interact with their environment and generate knowledge that contributes to the sustainable use of natural resources, offering solutions to current environmental challenges from a cultural perspective.

General Objective of the Program

Train professionals with an interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and intercultural perspective on nature, its resources, and peoples, with comprehensive and holistic competencies in Ethnobiology and Bioculture. Prepare them to generate and co-participate in the development of advanced knowledge, concepts, theories, and research methodologies in the fields of complex and emerging sciences of cultural biology, while fostering professional practice grounded in bioethics, a commitment to multidisciplinary cooperation, and a high level of impact across diverse educational perspectives and in the academic, research, economic, social, and administrative spheres, as well as for those wishing to continue their postdoctoral training.

Specific Objectives

  • Train highly qualified human resources with the interdisciplinary understanding and skills necessary to identify, diagnose, assess, provide support, and develop constructive solutions to relevant issues in the areas of Biodiversity and Territories, Environmental Management, Epistemologies of Nature, Environmental Resilience, Genetic Resources, Uses of Biodiversity, Forest Conservation Associated with Traditional Knowledge, Food and Health, Autonomy and Ancestral Territories, based on approaches that bring different epistemes into dialogue.
  • Train and prepare researchers from within social communities who are aware of the sociocultural realities of nature and its resources, committed to socioeconomic and political development at the local and global levels, advocates for their own natural resources and the seeds of life, creative, and equipped with a solid theoretical background, advanced training in biocultural research techniques, and scientific and social communication skills. These competencies are necessary to advance diverse forms of knowledge, bridge different languages and forms of expression, contextualize territories, and integrate them with experiential processes and the ways in which societies live and coexist with their natural environments.

Graduate Profile

  • Work in interdisciplinary teams from bioethical, cultural, social, political, and economic perspectives to generate new knowledge paradigms, propose alternative solutions to problems associated with natural resources and the environment based on different rationalities, address and resolve critical environmental situations and territorial conflicts, and promote the sociocultural visibility and ecological sustainability of the country.
  • Develop and participate in interdisciplinary, holistic, and bioethical research activities in the field of Ethnobiology and Bioculture, applying interdisciplinary methods to conduct research based on socio-environmental realities, generate new knowledge, and develop critical proposals regarding the methodologies used to transform paradigms within the framework of biodiversity complexity.
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills required for teaching, research, and professional practice in the fields of Ethnobiology and Bioculture.
  • Strengthen and propose public policies and integrate the role of Ethnobiology in addressing new challenges arising from climate change in food systems, healthcare models, and the recovery of traditional knowledge for self-determined development, enabling them to connect these issues with studies in undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as community health, environmental, and education programs.
