Who We Are and Our History

Cicaficultura is the Center for Innovation and Social Appropriation for Coffee Growing. With the purpose of bringing together technical and academic efforts, within the framework of the Master’s Program in Interdisciplinary Development Studies at the University of Cauca, 30 extension workers from the Departmental Coffee Growers Committee of Cauca were trained, with whom a proposal was formulated to consolidate a center for research, promotion, and social innovation for regional development, based on coffee growing in Cauca. After 10 years of work, nearly 20 faculty members and researchers from the University of Cauca, coffee-growing leaders, and the Departmental Coffee Growers Committee of Cauca have joined efforts to improve the living conditions of coffee-growing families in Cauca through the articulation of strategies and synergies in solidarity economies, agroecology, intercultural education, and the realization of the Research Center.

Mission

The Innovation and Social Appropriation Center for Coffee Growing – Cicaficultura – conducts research and manages knowledge through intercultural rural education, communication and culture, agroecology, and the social and solidarity economy to promote regional development through the dialogue of knowledge and a territorial approach. Its purpose is to foster social appropriation and innovation, thereby strengthening the autonomy and sustainability of coffee-growing communities through a partnership among the University, Business, Government, and Society.

Vision

The Innovation and Social Appropriation Center for Coffee Growing – Cicaficultura – will be a research center recognized nationally and internationally for its commitment to social innovation and its contribution to the sustainability of the territories of coffee-growing communities.

Finca escuela agroecológica demostrativa

Apoya en: Caracterizar los territorios de acuerdo a los instrumentos desarrollados por Cicaficultura, en el marco de la finca escuela. Implementar fincas escuela en cada uno de los territorios. Realizar las rutas de transición para que las Fincas Escuela Bioaulas FEB y la caficultura de los territorios sea sustentable en el tiempo teniendo en cuenta los procesos pedagógicos asociativos y de comunicación. Mejorar los aspectos relacionados con el desarrollo de la estrategia de propiedad intelectual para aumentar la TRL de 6 a TRL 8.

Estrategias de diversificación del ingreso

Comprende el apoyo para la cotización social, económica y organizativa de estrategias como: casas de semillas, huertas, comunitarias, fábrica de bioinsumos, tiendas comunitarias, viveros forestales nativos.

Propone líneas temáticas de primero a grado noveno, con matemáticas, español, ciencias naturales, ciencias sociales, en el marco del a caficultura, para docentes y estudiantes de zonas rurales cafeteras.

Se Realizan seguimientos del proceso de compostación en el prototipo compostera circular mediante parámetros como temperatura, humedad, pH, color y olor. Se evaluan las características fisicoquímicas y microbiológicas del compost obtenido en el prototipo compostera circular. Se Analiza la respuesta agronómica del cultivo de lechuga a la aplicación de compost obtenido en el prototipo compostera circular. Se Identifican aspectos socioeconómicos de mercado y financieros, de la tecnología a transferir.

Manejo de indicadores socioambientales, económicos, organizativos y culturales, desde el metabolismo rural, Emergy, la sustentabilidad.

Research Lines

Intercultural Rural Education:

Educational strategies with relevance to social innovation and development are designed and implemented. Pedagogical actions in social innovation for rural extension.
Social knowledge management strategies are developed in contexts of cultural diversity.
Expansion of the School and Coffee Program.
Design of non-formal education programs.
Development of professional education programs and programs by propaedeutic cycles.

Social and Solidarity Economy:

Socio-territorial strategies are designed and implemented for the development of social and solidarity economies and for income diversification based on the multifunctionality of the territory.
Socioeconomic studies of local productive processes are conducted.
Definition of ten income diversification strategies based on the multifunctionality of the territory.

Agroecology:

Design of sustainable agroecological coffee production systems and strategies for food, energy, and technological sovereignty within the territories.

Local territorial theoretical and methodological approach.
Concrete actions to promote food sovereignty.
Implementation of demonstrative agroecological teaching farms.

Communication and outreach strategies are designed and implemented to disseminate processes and research results related to diverse coffee-growing systems.
A Geographic Information System is implemented.
Identification of coffee-growing biocultural heritage.
