Intellectual Property Area

The Management of intellectual property encompasses all actions aimed at obtaining Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for research results generated within the University and ensuring their proper management.

Through the Intellectual Property Management component, the results of the institution’s research groups are identified and evaluated based on their originality, novelty, applicability, and inventive level. This assessment serves as the basis for determining their protection through intellectual property rights (copyright and industrial property rights) and as a mechanism for safeguarding the knowledge contributed by the authors and inventors of such works and inventions.

We support the management of the University's intellectual property.

Through professionals specialized in intellectual property, support is provided to the university community in matters related to intellectual property.

The Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Engagement with the Environment Division (DAE) coordinates the Intellectual Property Committee, pursuant to Superior Agreement 015 of 2015 (establishment of the University of Cauca Research System). Review of the intellectual property component of agreements, contracts, confidentiality agreements, Spin-Offs, technology transfer, licensing, and STI contracting.

Functions of the Intellectual Property Committee

Support the Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Engagement with the Environment Division in the development of proposals on policies, regulations, and procedures that enable the evaluation, monitoring, and control of matters related to intellectual property.
Disseminate information on intellectual property among the university community, and promote the education and training of University faculty members in intellectual property matters.

Review, issue opinions on, and make recommendations regarding matters related to intellectual property that are submitted for its consideration.
Review and issue opinions on information received concerning potential infringements of intellectual property rights, and bring such matters to the attention of the Vice President for Research, in order to promote the appropriate actions before the internal and external oversight and supervisory authorities.

CATI Program

In partnership with the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC), the University of Cauca is part of the CATI Program – Technology and Innovation Support Center (CATI). This program is led by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) with the purpose of facilitating innovators’ access to and strategic use of technological and industrial property information. At present, these centers make up a national network that promotes the use of the technological information contained in patent documents and provides guidance on industrial property matters. Our objective is to facilitate access to the technological information contained in patent documents and to strengthen the capacity to use it effectively in support of innovation and the country’s economic growth.

Institutional Intellectual Property Regulations

Superior Agreement 015 of 2015 (establishment of the University of Cauca Research System) establishes, in Article 4, Section 4.3.7, that the Division of Engagement with the Environment is responsible for coordinating and supporting procedures related to the management of intellectual property associated with research projects and products, in accordance with regulations on copyright and industrial property rights, and for promoting training activities for the university community on this subject.

More specifically, the University has Superior Agreement 004 of 2018, whose purpose is to regulate intellectual property rights within the University. This regulation is an important normative instrument, as it addresses issues such as the authorship of works and creations produced by members of the University community, the ownership of economic rights, the management of intellectual property when other entities participate, among other matters.

What is a patent?

A patent is a certificate granted by the State that recognizes an invention, describes the invention, and establishes ownership by the patent holder, granting them, for a limited period of time, the exclusive right to prevent third parties from using or exploiting the invention without their consent. When the patent rights expire, the technology enters the public domain.
