In 1996, the Superior Council of the University of Cauca established the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and a year later, in 1997, the Departments of Geography and History, ushering in a modern and renewed stage for the programs. The Department of Geography comprises a single program: Regional and Environmental Development Geography.
The Regional and Environmental Development Geography Program places special emphasis on content that enables its graduates to participate in the formulation of proposals aimed at fostering the development of the various regions and their environmental surroundings. The program’s areas of emphasis respond, to a great extent, to the requirements of the geographical context in which the University is located. In this regard, the program has conducted research primarily related to land-use planning studies, municipal development plans, environmental risk studies, and specific regional issues focused on analyzing dynamics related to development, social opportunities, poverty, geographic information systems applied to the study of watersheds, land cover and land use, and socioeconomic aspects, which distinguish it from other programs offered in the country.
Mission
As its mission, in accordance with that of the Alma Mater, it seeks to contribute to the comprehensive education of Geography professionals as social actors for regional and environmental development through teaching, research, and outreach to the community.
Vision
Advance geographic knowledge to promote local, regional, and national development.
Educate geographers with a comprehensive understanding of the region and the environment, equipped to conduct research, provide guidance, manage, and administer the various aspects related to sustainable development policies and projections that foster greater human development.
