The History Program is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Cauca, whose mission and vision are expressed in the Institutional Educational Project (PEI), Agreement 096 of December 22, 1998, which establishes the priority of educating individuals with ethical integrity and professional competence, democrats committed to the city and in harmony with their surroundings.
The University of Cauca generates and disseminates science, technical knowledge, technology, art, and culture through teaching, research, and social engagement. In this regard, the mission of the History Program is to educate researchers with competencies to analyze society, politics, mentalities, the economy, and, in relation to microhistory and regional history, in accordance with an interdisciplinary structure that seeks to interact with other social groups in the department and the country.
In this way, it assumes the ethical commitment to build a social fabric through research, reading, writing, and the dissemination of its content through current communication technologies. This mission is reflected in the program’s curriculum design and in the integration of its graduates into various professional fields in regional and local contexts.
The University of Cauca’s vision includes a historical commitment to strengthening the construction of an equitable and just society, expressed through an ethical and supportive citizen. The History Program adopts this purpose as its vision and embodies it through its commitment to contributing to the consolidation of the different levels of memory/forgetting among the various human groups that make up the southwestern region, educating researchers with critical thinking and the ability to make significant contributions to the understanding of the historical processes that have shaped the country and to their projection in the prospective processes that today constitute axes of thought that ensure the social transformation and change required by society.
The program’s vision is reflected in the restructuring processes it has undertaken. Likewise, it is reflected in the results of student mobility in accordance with the internationalization policy implemented by the University through interinstitutional agreements.
It is also reflected in the participation of its faculty members in the creation of the Master’s Programs in History and Humanities and the Doctoral Program in Humanities.

In addition, students in the program may access the University’s television studio as well as its radio booth. Likewise, the program has access to the services of the Central Archive of Cauca, an entity affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Head of the Department of History has been a faculty member at the University of Cauca since August 1973. She holds Bachelor’s Degrees in History and Education-History from the University of Valle, a Master’s Degree in History from Vanderbilt University (United States), and is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Brasilia. She has also served as Head of the Department of History, Coordinator of the Specialization in Teaching Colombian History, the Master’s Program in Latin American Political Problems Studies, Director of the Institute of Graduate Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, President of the Academy of History of Cauca, and a member of other academies at the national level.
