Home Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Intercultural Studies
The Department of Intercultural Studies –DEI- is the most recently established academic unit in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, through Agreement 050 of August 2, 2005 (see annex No. 7: Agreement 050 of August 2, 2005, establishment of the DEI). This Department emerged at the initiative of the team of professors who, since 1993, had been leading the implementation of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Ethnoeducation, which until then had been affiliated with the Open and Distance Education Center –CEAD-. The main objective of this new Department was to strengthen this field both within the University itself and at the regional and national levels.
From a conceptual perspective, Intercultural Studies are understood as a theoretical and political proposal that brings together two relatively new fields in Latin American academic settings: cultural studies and interculturality. The Department of Intercultural Studies is projected as an interdisciplinary academic unit responsible for producing knowledge regarding issues of recognition and the management of cultural difference and ethnic otherness in contemporary multicultural societies.
Among the services offered by the Department of Intercultural Studies is the Comprehensive, Social, and Humanistic Education Program – FISH, which offers courses to the entire university community of our alma mater.
Mission
It is our mission “to develop an intellectual project within the University of Cauca, aimed at creating spaces for dialogue and knowledge production from an intercultural perspective.”
Vision
The need to redefine the relationships between academia and society, as well as the conceptions and practices of knowledge production in these settings. Intercultural dialogue entails recognizing the complexity of the social realm and the need for new ways of approaching it through knowledge practices. This dialogue recognizes the unfinished nature of all knowledge systems and the richness of their exchange and mutual influence.
Strengthen work in the Language Sciences at the University of Cauca and in the region, with the purpose of contributing to the quality of education and to the recognition, protection, and development of linguistic diversity.
The Rogerio Velásquez Murillo Afro-Colombian Lecture Series was established at the University of Cauca in 2014 with the aim of providing an academic space for the entire community of Popayán to disseminate the thought, art, and history of Afro-Colombian peoples, as a way of contributing to their recognition and dignification. It is held annually as part of the National Afro-Colombian Day on May 21.
