Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Faculty Council

The Faculty Council is a body with decision-making authority in academic matters and an advisory role to the Dean on various issues concerning the academic unit it represents.

The following functions correspond to the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as a body with decision-making authority:

  • Monitor compliance with the teaching and research programs adopted by the Academic Council.
  • Perform the functions assigned to it by the Faculty Regulations and the Student Regulations issued by the Superior Council.
  • Certify to the Rector that the legal and regulatory requirements for the awarding of degrees have been met.
  • Adopt or modify the course programs submitted by the Heads of Department through the Dean, subject to the approved teaching programs.
  • Impose disciplinary sanctions whose application is reserved to it by law or the University’s regulations.
  • Request that the Academic Council establish admission quotas for new students.
  • Submit the list of candidates for Deans, Heads of Department, and Institute Directors.
  • Adopt its own regulations.
  • Annually submit the Faculty’s Development Plan and Budget Proposal to the Academic Council. (Agreement 031 of June 3, 1997, Art. 6).
  • Hear appeals filed against academic decisions issued by the Dean of the Faculty in cases provided for by law, the statutes, and the regulations. Except where otherwise provided by law, the administrative academic procedure concludes with the decisions made by the Faculty Council on appeal in relation to actions taken by Deans, Heads, or Directors of academic units.
  • The decisions of the Faculty Councils are subject only to an appeal for reconsideration before the same Council (Agreement 031 of June 3, 1997, Article 6).
  • Any other functions assigned to it by law, the statutes, and the regulations.

As an advisory body

According to Article 40 of Agreement 105 of 1993, the following functions correspond to the Faculty Council as an advisory body to the Dean:

  • Provide an opinion on the creation, modification, or elimination of the Faculty’s teaching and research programs, as well as on the work of the faculty members assigned to the respective Faculty, in accordance with the provisions of the statutes and regulations.
  • Provide advice in the faculty recruitment and selection process.
  • Submit to the Superior Council, through the Rector, the results of the faculty recruitment and selection process.
  • Propose candidates for distinctions.
  • Propose the Faculty’s academic activities calendar.
  • Provide an opinion on research, advisory, and university outreach policies and plans submitted for its consideration.
  • Any other functions assigned to it by law, the statutes, and the regulations.

The Council shall meet ordinarily once a week and extraordinarily when convened by its Chair. Council members must be notified in writing of every Council session.
