The University of Cauca has the “José María Arboleda Llorente” Historical Research Center, the most important archive at the regional level and the second most important at the national level, not only because of the age of its documents, but also because of the volume, continuity of the information, and degree to which it has been catalogued. Its collections allow the general community to consult historical information about Popayán, Cauca, and other municipalities and departments of the country.
This Center is affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and was established in 1970, based on the documents of the former Central Archive of Cauca, which was preserved and catalogued by Mr. José María Arboleda Llorente from 1928 until his death in 1969.
On September 18, 1928, José María Arboleda Llorente began cataloguing the Former Central Archive of Cauca, a collection that documented the administrative and political development of one of the most prominent territorial entities in national history, whose greatest extent encompassed 70% of present-day Colombian territory: the Government of Popayán during the Colonial period, or Province of Popayán; the Sovereign State of Cauca; and the Department of Cauca during the Republic. The documentation accumulated over more than 300 years reflects not only local history but also that of all the affiliated municipalities which, under a centralized administration, sent copies of their various proceedings to the city of Popayán.
Since there were no established archival science guidelines at the time to determine how historical documents should be catalogued, Arboleda Llorente devised his own system, grouping the documents by period (Colonial period, Independence, and Republic) and, in turn, organizing them by topics and subtopics. Likewise, each document was assigned a topographic number, and a cataloguing record was prepared containing the sender’s and recipient’s information, a brief summary of its contents, date and place of origin, number of folios, and observations. These elements resulted in one of the most comprehensive cataloguing systems for historical archives in Latin America.
In 1946, the archive was transferred to the care of the University of Cauca, which has been responsible for its custody and maintenance ever since, in addition to incorporating other documentary collections, such as Notarial Records, the Cabildo, the University of Cauca, the College of Missions Nuestra Señora de las Gracias, among others, which, in terms of classification, receive the same treatment as those catalogued through the 1940s. Following the death of the Archive’s founder in 1969, the University of Cauca established the José María Arboleda Llorente Historical Research Center in 1970 and continued the work of preserving, cataloguing, and making available to the public the documents that preserve a significant part of the nation’s historical memory.
