Department of Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics is a university academic unit belonging to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences that carries out teaching, research, and social engagement activities in the field of Language Sciences. This Department was established through Agreement No. 031 of June 3, 1997, issued by the Superior Council, and conducts its activities primarily at the El Carmen Cloister, home of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Cauca.

Mission

The Department of Linguistics, through the study of language and languages, contributes to the understanding, engagement, and comprehensive education of students at the University of Cauca in human, academic, and scientific areas, and promotes the education and research of varieties of Colombian Spanish, reading and writing, and the revitalization and teaching of Indigenous languages.

Vision

To be a leader in southwestern Colombia in the field of language and language studies concerning the languages present in the region, through the core functions of research, teaching, and social engagement, with faculty members who are principled, ethical, competent, and committed to the generation and application of knowledge to educate excellent professionals who contribute to the progress and development of society.

General Objective

Strengthen work in the Language Sciences at the University of Cauca and in the region, with the purpose of contributing to the quality of education and to the recognition, protection, and development of linguistic diversity.

Specific Objectives

Promote research in the Language Sciences.
Contribute to the description of regional varieties of Spanish and Indigenous languages in southwestern Colombia.
Contribute to the consolidation of the field of study related to the revitalization and teaching of Indigenous languages.
Promote semiotic studies in the reflection, analysis, and intervention of national and regional educational and pedagogical issues.
Generate and support social engagement projects that require reflection, analysis, and action concerning language.
Promote reflection and research on the complex processes related to reading and writing, seeking positive effects on improving the quality and equity of education.
Provide services to different programs of the University of Cauca.

Academic Support

The Department of Linguistics provides teaching services to the following academic programs:

Modern Languages
Spanish and Literature
Ethnoeducation
Master's Degree in Humanities
Doctoral Program in Educational Sciences
Comprehensive, Social, and Humanistic Education Program component, through Reading and Writing courses for academic programs such as Geography, Philosophy, Accounting, Tourism, Law, Modern Languages, Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications, among others.

The Department of Linguistics is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and, therefore, has access to the physical infrastructure of the El Carmen Cloister and the new Faculty building, as well as to the educational resources of this academic unit, including:

Head of the Department of Linguistics

Bachelor’s Degree in Modern Languages (University of Cauca), Specialist Degree in Reading and Writing Pedagogy (University of Cauca), Master’s Degree in Linguistics and Spanish (University of Valle), Doctorate in Education, Language and Education Area (University of Valle), and Postdoctoral Studies in Internationalization and Accreditation of Higher Education (Center for Studies and Research for Teacher Development -CENID- Mexico). He completed studies at the Ibero-American Cooperation Institute in Madrid, Spain, where he obtained two Diplomas: Researcher in Spanish Language and Literature, and Spanish Language and Literature Teacher.
