Program Overview

The Forestry Engineering Program was established by Agreement No. 040 of September 10, 1999, issued by the Higher Council of the University of Cauca. It was granted Qualified Registration through Resolution No. 1845 of July 2, 2004, issued by the Ministry of National Education. The program began its academic activities in January 2003. It is part of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and aims to provide academic training that meets the needs of the region, preparing forestry professionals who are committed to the national and regional context and to harnessing the country’s potential and strengths.

The Forestry Engineering Program provides students with the scientific and technological knowledge needed to manage forest resources, protect the environment, and promote the country’s sustainable development. Our students choose Forestry Engineering because of their commitment to the conservation and management of natural resources, enabling them to develop the judgment needed to determine the most appropriate uses of a site based on its terrain and climate, as well as to assess the potential damage caused by certain land-use practices.

Program General Objective

To educate professionals with an ethical, socio-humanistic, scientific, and technological foundation, equipped to manage natural forests, forest plantations, and trees; capable of collaborating with social organizations and regional, national, and international public or private institutions; and committed to promoting the sustainable management of forest resources, their diversity, and the ecosystem services they provide.

Specific Objectives

  • Develop competencies in Forestry Engineering professionals through comprehensive training that emphasizes ethics and human values, fostering knowledge in the fields of basic sciences, engineering, and applied engineering in forestry and environmental sciences.
  • Contribute to strengthening the forestry sector through scientific research and technological innovation aimed at solving problems related to the conservation, access, use, and management of forest goods and services, as well as the well-being of humans and associated animal communities.
  • Educate professionals capable of managing territories at the watershed level within the environmental institutional framework, as well as managing rural water supply micro-watersheds through community-based water management.
  • Provide technical and management tools for the protection of natural forests, their sustainable use, and the regulation of ecosystem services to reduce degradation, deforestation, and species extinction.
  • Educate professionals capable of integrating interdisciplinary teams in ecological restoration of natural ecosystems, incorporating native trees into agroecosystems to support food sovereignty, and implementing productive commercial reforestation projects.
  • Foster students’ interest and leadership in strengthening, integrating, and coordinating forestry and guadua production chains, encompassing the production, extraction, processing, and marketing of natural timber and non-timber products.
