At the initiative of the Academic Vice-Rectorate, the University of Cauca began offering English courses with a communicative emphasis to students from the various academic programs in 1999.
Through Agreement No. 027 of September 28, 2000, issued by the Academic Council, the second language or foreign language component in undergraduate programs was modified, eliminating, for this purpose, the foreign language courses that were part of the study plans of undergraduate programs. This Agreement came into effect for students who entered in the second academic period of 2000 and established the requirement of a Foreign Language Proficiency Test (PSI) as a requirement for obtaining an undergraduate degree. For this purpose, the English Language Training Program (PFI) was created as a unit of the Academic Vice-Rectorate of the University of Cauca.
In 2006, the Academic Council modified Agreement 027 of 2000 and established Agreement 005 of 2006. Since that year, the language offerings were expanded to include Italian, Portuguese, and French, and the unit changed its name to the Language Training Program (PFI). In November 2011, Agreement 005 of 2006 was modified in order to unify and consolidate the regulations governing student participation in the PFI and to define the requirements and procedures for taking the PSI through Agreement 015 of November 2, 2015. The latest modification to Agreement 015 of 2015 was made in 2021 through Agreement 021 of September 29, 2021. Agreement 021 establishes an intermediate B1 language level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), as a graduation requirement for students at the University of Cauca.
According to Agreement 021, which is currently in force, the B1 language requirement is fulfilled by taking and passing the PSI offered by the PFI of the University of Cauca; passing four (4) levels of a foreign language offered by the PFI with an average grade of three point five (3.5) or higher across the four courses; taking and passing a standardized examination; submitting results showing a B1 level or higher in the English Module of the Saber Pro Examination; and submitting certificates showing a B1 level from institutional foreign language examinations administered by universities or higher education institutions. Currently, the PFI focuses on comprehensive instruction in English, Italian, and Portuguese, serving 3,000 students per semester. The PFI emphasizes comprehensive instruction in the languages offered in accordance with CEFR standards, and upon completing their training, students achieve a B1 level.
To be a leading and exemplary Program at the University and in the Department of Cauca in comprehensive foreign language instruction, in order to ensure better professional development for those who make up the university community.
