This collection documents the early years of the University of Cauca. It contains the founding records of our Alma Mater (1827), the first academic provisions, and other relevant documents that are not only essential to the development of our institutional history but also constitute fundamental sources for research on education in Colombia.
Likewise, there are documents from the Colonial and Independence periods which, although they predate the establishment of the University, were donated by various entities and individuals for incorporation into its Archives.
This collection contains political and administrative information on the Government of Popayán, the Province of Popayán, the Sovereign State of Cauca, and the Department of Cauca, as well as on the various settlements that, at different points in national history, were part of these territorial entities. To facilitate researchers’ searches according to their specific interests, this collection is catalogued by historical periods: Colonial period, Independence, and Republic; subjects: civil, ecclesiastical, judicial, military, and private; and various subtopics.
This collection is composed mostly of correspondence on various matters sent to General Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera y Arboleda by his family, various prominent figures, and ordinary citizens.
