Agroecology Engineering at the University of Cauca is a program designed to address the socio-environmental and production challenges facing rural regions, particularly in the Colombian context. Its curriculum integrates scientific, technical, and socioeconomic knowledge for the design, implementation, and management of sustainable agroecological and agri-food systems, promoting ecosystem conservation, food sovereignty, and the empowerment of rural communities. Through interdisciplinary training, the program prepares professionals capable of leading agroecological transition processes, integrating scientific and traditional knowledge, and contributing to the sustainable development of territories.

The Agroecology Engineering Program at the University of Cauca is designed to address the socio-environmental and production challenges facing rural regions, particularly in the Colombian context. Through an integrative approach, the program aims to educate professionals with technical, scientific, and human skills to promote the agroecological transition, while respecting local ecosystems and strengthening food sovereignty.

Program General Objective

To educate professionals with scientific, technical, and socioeconomic competencies for the design, implementation, and management of sustainable agroecological and agri-food systems, equipped to lead transitions across diverse territorial contexts.

Specific Objectives

  • Enhance students’ knowledge and implementation of qualitative and/or quantitative research methodologies that make it possible to identify and preserve sustainable natural resource management practices, based on the design of integrated production systems that promote environmental improvement and the regulation and economic exchange of agroecological products in the Department of Cauca.
  • Develop processes suited to rural and peri-urban contexts that strengthen family farming, social organization, and cooperation through the development of multifunctional projects aimed at improving the living conditions of rural communities.
  • Recognize and uphold communities’ traditional knowledge through sustainable agroecological practices and by consolidating and strengthening life plans and social organization, leading to the formulation of inclusive public policies aimed at endogenous and regional development.
  • Implement food security and food sovereignty processes in rural territories to promote soil fertility and the development of environmentally friendly technological strategies, while enabling the establishment of production units free from chemical contaminants.
  • Lead actions suited to the surrounding area to preserve ancestral and traditional values related to agricultural and livestock practices, thereby promoting generational renewal and reaffirming the territory as a unit of life.
