The academic purpose guiding the program is to train anthropologists and researchers who are knowledgeable about the development of the discipline, have a clear interdisciplinary perspective, and specialize in two of its fields: sociocultural anthropology and archaeology.
Cauca and, more broadly, southwestern Colombia constitute an anthropological laboratory, or rather, a privileged setting for anthropological analysis, due to the ethnic diversity and sociocultural contrasts, as well as the distinct historical trajectories of the populations and social groups that inhabit the region. Indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and peasant social movements in Cauca drive many of the resistance and protest dynamics across the country. It is important to note, however, that the Department of Anthropology at the University of Cauca has alternated between approaches that encourage reflection on these issues, some of which converge in support of political agendas, and others that focus on different aspects of regional life, with analytical connections to national or global spheres of varying degrees and scope.
To train anthropologists who research sociocultural differences in regional and national contexts, providing them with excellent theoretical and practical training and fostering a critical mindset that enables them to work directly with diverse communities in the region, throughout the country, and around the world.
The graduate profile of the Anthropology Program is defined by a sustained focus on developing research skills and competencies, which serve as a defining feature of its identity and distinguish it from other Anthropology programs in the country.
The program’s emphasis on research training enables graduates to work not only in research roles but also in administrative and other professional positions. We believe this rigorous training can be applied to other areas of professional practice.
