The History Program at the University of Cauca was established by Superior Council Agreement No. 010 of March 20, 2001, with the aim of educating historians with strong research skills, critical thinking, and an understanding of historical and social processes. Since its creation, the program has undergone several curriculum updates, including a reduction in the study plan from 171 to 134 credits, followed by a subsequent revision. In 2021, the Ministry of National Education renewed its Qualified Registration, and in 2023, it granted High-Quality Accreditation for four years through Resolution No. 006404 of April 20, recognizing the outcomes of the self-assessment process and the academic peer review visit.
As a result of these evaluation and academic reflection processes, Superior Council Agreement No. 034 of November 7, 2023, approved a new curriculum reform, establishing a study plan comprising eight semesters and 136 academic credits. This proposal retains historical research as its fundamental pillar while strengthening disciplinary, theoretical-methodological, and interdisciplinary training. It also incorporates fields such as audiovisual languages, digital humanities, heritage, history education, museums, and spaces of memory. In this way, the program combines more than two decades of academic experience with contemporary developments in the discipline and new opportunities to research, interpret, and disseminate historical knowledge.
In the History Program at the University of Cauca, you will develop the skills needed to research, analyze, and interpret historical processes, recognizing their changes, continuities, and multiple perspectives. This training combines the rigor of historical research with diverse ways of producing, communicating, and disseminating knowledge.
One of the program’s distinguishing features is its interest in exploring different languages and ways of narrating history. Alongside academic writing and research, you will have the opportunity to work with photography, film, documentaries, podcasts, and digital narratives, broadening the possibilities for conducting research, creating content, and making historical knowledge accessible to diverse audiences and settings.
This training opens up professional opportunities in fields such as historical and cultural research, teaching, archives, museums, heritage, cultural management, and public and private institutions. It also enables graduates to participate in audiovisual production projects, content creation, and historical outreach.
To provide comprehensive training for historians, equipping them with the academic, scientific, and technological competencies required to work in research and the cultural industry.
During their undergraduate studies, graduates of the History Program at the University of Cauca will have explored and researched contemporary theoretical and methodological issues that shape the discipline of history and related fields. This training aims to develop their critical capacity to uncover the metahistorical and metacritical assumptions underlying historiography on these subjects in Colombia and Latin America.
In this regard, they will develop a perspective on Colombia and Latin America grounded in their own realities, beyond the teleological approaches to history and historicist frameworks that have traditionally shaped analyses and interpretations of the continent.
